Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangaluru, Jul 16 : An Air India Express flight IX 814, that landed on Sunday, July 16 early morning at Mangaluru International Airport from Dubai, made the 185 passenges anxious as it 'momentarily' veered off the runway due to poor weather conditions, according to the Airport Authority of India officials.

"There was nothing to panic. Everything was alright. No passegnegers was injured. Aircraft was also not damaged. It was raining heavily at the irport during early morning hours when the incident took place." said an eye witness.

The pilots of the flight - IX814 - were able to bring the Boeing 737 back to the runway's centre line after it skidded.

The flight was reportedly carrying 185 people - including two infants - when the incident took place.

"Just as the aircraft was about to touch down, there was sudden gust of wind and heavy rain. The aircraft skidded to the right momentarily after the touch down. But got back to the center line thereafter," Air India Express CEO Shyam Sundar was quoted as saying.

"There was no discomfort or injury to any passenger. Post arrival inspection of the aircraft revealed no damages." he added.

Our Mangalore city is geographically blessed with coastal line and also which is not surrounded by mountain ranges we can have a safest airport with long runways at par with other airports like Mumbai/ Dubai/Chennai/Kochin.

But it is our Bad luck that even though we have flat surfaces in city we have airport on table top. :-(

Our government is investing on expanding this table where there is no margin for error, rather they should take immediate action to have a airport in some other safest location.

Money is not more important than lives of our people

Why don't we look at this incident from a positive angle? It is well known that landing in heavy rains is not an easy job and particularly when the runway is short. Why don't we appreciate the ingenuity of the pilot who controlled the aircraft admiringly well as soon as he realised that it had skidded to the right. Full marks to the Air India pilot for a job very well done.

When government issues selection notification they always want go-getters for the job.... but later performance is very very poor... where they go wrong? ? Wrong selection on candidates? The earlier plan by the experts committee was to construct runway from Bajpe Town (near present Police Station) towards Old Airport at Adyapadi (north to south). It could have been done at lesser cost than going in for the present new runway on hilltop. Unfortunately this too was shelved off by politicians who did not see huge benefits for them.

The issue here is the airport not being equipped with the accurate weather forecast equiwnt or there was a sudden unexpected tail wind or cross wind due to monsoon effect (we cannot preditct or fight the nature) or any other sort of ususpected unwelcome wind factor during the touch down .

Pilots actoss the words are trained to and such surprise wind factors . One may see vedio about aircraft as big as A380s or B747's dancing around in cross winds while landing especially in Europe weather. The pilots in the are professional well trained and prepared for such a sort if apprach that they touchdown sliding sideways and then correct the center line with the nose wheel with the center line for a normal approac h. Some time pilots at last moment decide to abort landing and go around for another attempt to land in case of uncontrollable situation.

However Mangalore has a additianl risk factor of being table top runway and not much extra legroom for error or correction. Pilots have to be prepared for adverse weathe condition while landing especially during monsoon or abort landing or divert in case of adverse weather condition. Additianl aiports should have better mordern weather predicting equipments that may confirm the conditions for a safe landing for the aircraft.

For the timebeing let's praise and pray for the Lord above for averting a mishap. We love our aiport . It's a different feeling to fly in and out internationally at least to gulf from our airport directly compared to taking connecting flights . Let's hope IXE improves.

You have no other work, but counting mistakes Mr. Francis.
When the announcement is made to close all electronic items and mobiles, how many do follow that???
As soon as the flight lands, many of them start un-buckling even after asked to be seated till the flight stops, do you follow safety instructions???
People make nuisance inside flight if the flight is diverted for genuine reasons, why do they need to do that, you ever understand that. Isn't it for our safety.
There are such many things, we ourself are responsible and we need to first correct them and then start complaining.....

What is International required length? There's no domestic or international runway length.
The runway length at Bajpe is more than adequate to handle the aircrafts that fly and land here.
No one is going to use this runway for a B747 or a A380

*usually require at least 8,000 ft (2,438 m) at sea level and somewhat more at higher altitude airports.
    *
On 19 August 1981, Indian Airlines Flight 557, a HAL 748 VT-DXF overshot the 5,783 feet (1,763 m) old runway 27 at Mangalore-Bajpe Airport in wet weather. The aircraft came to a halt just beyond the runway edge. While there were no fatalities, the aircraft was damaged beyond repair and was written off. One of the passengers was Veerappa Moily, then Finance Minister of Karnataka. An investigation revealed that the pilot had not set the aircraft's flaps to the correct position for landing, and the aircraft had landed long on the runway and at excessive speed. The runway had a downslope and the aircraft had landed with a tailwind.
On 22 May 2010, Air India Express Flight 812, a Boeing 737-800 VT-AXV, flying on the Dubai-Mangalore route, overshot the 8,033 feet (2,448 m) runway number 06/24, killing 158 people, including 6 crew; only 8 survived. The aircraft crashed when it overshot the runway and veered into a steep gorge at the end of the runway. The starboard wing impacted the concrete socket of the instrument landing system localiser antenna, rendering it unusable. This resulted in delayed or cancelled flights for two weeks during the monsoon rains, which reduced visibility. It took the airport a little under a month to repair and calibrate the ILS and bring it back online.

    JNB, Mangalore-Mumbai.

Let me help here. What JNB meant was the Runway is a bit short rather squeezed. Yes, there is no prescribed length as such. I don't blame JNB for his comment. Why do you think the Government, DGCA & AAI accepted the proposal to extend the Runway Length by acquiring land and so on? Ask yourself. When the Government agrees it's unsafe and that the Runway needs an extension, I find no fault in supporting JNB's comment. But yes, he has placed his comment in a different way, that's what I feel.

Do you like a Runway with extra pavement or like the one's we have in Mangalore? I would certainly preferred the first one. Mentally we feel safe thinking the Aircraft will halt even if it overshoots the Runway, and also has extra room on both the sides incase of skidding. And even cases of overshooting, the Piolt can increase speed and take-off again, wherein in Mangalore Airport s case it's not possible. We all know what happened previously. So chances of casualty during crashes is meagre.

Nevertheless, there have been instances where the Aircraft still crashed with heavy casualty with the first choice. But atleast there's some hope.

Mangalore Airport and few other table top Runways needs highly skilled Pilot including the one's who averted a major tragedy today. Applaud to the Pilot for his/her skills.

I fear to fly from Mangalore too. Everybody does. It's natural that after a previous Tragedy, people do get feared and comment. It's not like the Accident can never happen again, it can. But we need to be brave too.

But life and death is a part of life. Tragedy can struck anywhere anytime.
But yes, we do can minimise it to a certain extent.

Therefore kindly do not get into any mudslinging ,rather be glad that the Aircraft along with the passengers are safe and a would be major Tragedy has been averted.
Last but not the least, all are enlightened to their comments, but the good the better.
