Q: What are the job opportunities in Australia and Canada? What professions are in big demand right now?

A: As of now, Canada is open for all occupations - skilled, semi-skilled and trade-related occupations.

In Australia, mostly people from the IT sector, accounts, doctors, teachers, nurses, and engineers are in demand.

Q: What is the meaning of PR?

A: A PR or a permanent residence visa is one that allows a person to have all benefits of a citizen in any country. Canada and Australia are the only countries that give PR. Any skilled person is eligible for PR if their skill set meets the skill demand in professions in Australia and Canada.

A married person can also apply for PR with the family comprising spouse and children.

Q: How long is PR valid?

A: PR is valid for five years, and after completing three years in a country, one is eligible for citizenship.

Q: What is the criteria for a person to be entitled to a PR in Canada or Australia

A: The are certain requirements. The two countries look at skill requirement of the country and a point system. If your skill is in demand and you qualify in the point system that is calculated by age, qualification, experience, and language proficiency.

Q: Will changes in Australia 457 visa programme affect those applying for PR?

A: These changes will not affect those applying for PR. 457 is not for PR, it is a work permit. There are certain professions that are removed from the country's demand list, but it will not affect new applicants, as we are checking the eligibility as per new rules. The new rules will not affect people applying for PR.

Q: How long is the processing time? What would be some prominent hurdles along the way?

A: It may take around eight to ten months overall. This is the general processing time. Everything depends on the government itself.

If a person is eligible depending upon the eligibility criteria and English skills which includes IELTS, there will be no hurdles unless the person has a criminal record or serious illness.

Q: Can the applicant take parents or siblings after getting permanent residence?

A: Yes, the applicant can sponsor the sibling and parents. Siblings can be sponsored for PR. Parents, in the case of Australia, can get a PR, and in Canada, can get a long-term visa, not a PR.

Q: What is the total cost of government fee and lawyer fee?

A: For Canada, an individual would have to spend about Rs 2 lac to 2.5 lac. For a family of three, it will be around Rs 4 lac to 4.5 lac.

In Australia, it would cost Rs 3 lac for an individual. The cost for a family of four would be somewhere around Rs 6 lac.

Although in Canada you have the concept of 'showmoney' where you have to show the money in your bank account as proof, in Australia this procedure does not exist.

Q: How safe are these countries?

A: Obviously these countries are safer than India. Canada is one of the happiest countries with a good ranking in employment and education factors.

Q: How safe are you as an agency considering all these scams that we see around us at present?

A: Universal Immigration is not an Indian company. It has its head office in Brampton, Ontario.

To avoid scam, one should go to a licensed consultant only. Right now in India there are very few companies that are licensed. It is illegal to charge any fee to anyone if you are not a licensed agency. UI is a licensed immigration agency. We have ICCRC and MARA members with us. ICCRC is an authority that gives license to Canadian immigration agents, who want to work for Canada. Likewise, MARA is for Australia.

Q: Do Mangalureans have an added advantage in any way?

A: If the person knows a good deal of English, it adds as an advantage. Mangalureans are more fluent in English. Education is a needed factor. Experience is something anyone can gain. English proficiency counts as a main factor.

Q: Is it easier to try for PR from the Gulf or would it be better the NRIs to come down to Mangaluru and try for the visa?

A: They can stay wherever they are working and continue their process from there itself. They don't have to leave their current job and come back to India to start this process. They can scan their documents and send it to us and we can start the process. As they are Indian citizens, they are bound by the same rules as those in India.

We have had clients from India who have been in the UAE for years, and who never came down to India or visited our office in Bengaluru or Canada. They started the process, got their visas, and directly flew from where they lived.

Q: Are there unemployment-related cases with the candidates you dealt with for migration to Canada or Australia?

A: There are such cases. I wouldn't say getting job is easier there. Getting job is nowhere close to easy in any country. It depends on personal skills, ability to adapt and occupational flexibility. If I work as a manager here, for instance, I cannot expect to have a managerial level job as soon as I go to Australia or Canada, because I have no local experience there. I should be flexible enough to gain some local experience and then start looking for a post of my choice. I have to be flexible to working at even a slightly lower level, and eventually move towards the position I aspire to.

Q: Is there racism in Australia and Canada?

A: Yes, racism is prevalent everywhere, even in India. But human rights laws are quite strong there. A single person can sue a company. Whereas here, you cannot do much legally. The laws are very strong there.
