Shantaram Naik appointed Congress Goa unit chief

Panaji, Jul 8 (IANS): Congress's Rajya Sabha member Shantaram Naik was on Friday appointed the party's Goa unit chief in place of legislator Luizinho Faleiro.

Naik's term as member of the Rajya Sabha expires this month.

"Congress President Sonia Gandhi has accepted the suggestion to appoint Shantaram Naik as President of Goa Pradesh Congress Committee in place of Luizinho Faleiro with immediate effect," a party press release said.

Faleiro was facing rebellion from a section of Congress legislators in the coastal state. They blamed him and former Congress General Secretary Digvijaya Singh for losing an opportunity to form the government in the state in March despite the party emerging with the largest number of seats in the assembly.
