Modi remembers Emergency on its anniversary, pitches for preserving democracy

New Delhi, Jun 25 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi today remembered the Emergency imposed on this day in 1975, saying "such a black night" cannot be forgotten, and underlined the need for eternal vigilance to preserve democracy.

He recalled that democracy-lovers had fought a big battle against the Emergency imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and said the pro-democracy "heritage" needs to be strengthened. In his monthly radio programme 'Mann Ki Baat', Modi said it was essential to remember the incidents which have caused harm to democracy and move ahead towards the positives of democracy.

"Democracy is not only a system. It is our culture... Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty," he said. Recalling imposition of the Emergency on June 25, 1975, the Prime Minister said it was "such a black night which cannot be forgotten by any lover of democracy. No Indian can forget that."

He said that in a way, the entire nation had been converted into a prison, with opposing voices being curbed. "Along with Jaiprakash Narayan, many prominent leaders were jailed. Even the judiciary did not remain unaffected by the shadow of the Emergency. The media was completely rendered useless," the prime minister said.

He said the students of today's journalism and those working for democracy have been remembering "that black incident" as part of their continuous efforts to create awareness about democracy "They should be doing so," Modi said.

At that time, Atal Bihari Vajpayee was also imprisoned and he had penned a poem during that period, he said and recited the couplets written by the BJP stalwart.

The imposition of the Emergency had evoked a nationwide outrage and a mass movement which forced Indira Gandhi to lift it in less than two years.

"The democracy lovers had fought a big battle and showed how democracy was engrained in the hearts of every citizen of the vast country. That was reflected through the elections. That is our heritage and we have to strengthen that heritage," Modi said.

Indian Democracy is in real danger and the need of the hour is to have a strong opposition party instead a one party rule. Coalition rule will ensure preservation of our Democracy. What we are witnessing in India today is decentralised emergency.

Modiji, stop calling "pot calling kettle black". I wish you knew the meaning of democracy before you point a finger at Inderaji. Probably, you have forgotten "when you point one finger to Inderaji, there are 4 pointing at you" for your utter failure in upholding democracy. It is unfortunate that the people of our country trusted you (and that includes me) but you failed miserably. I am trying to recollect one original idea generated by you or your party to change the map of India. NONE. However, you did adopt everything Mr Manmohan during his tenure introduced and baptized it as your own and that is the sad part.

Your achievements - tell the whole world that rockets and planes were invented and introduced in India 5000 years before, even before civilization touched the mankind. Define the meaning of communalism, interfere in the lives of common man by dictating what they can eat and what they should not. Advocate pregnant ladies what they should eat and what they should abstain from! In one word ... destroy the very fabric of the constitution of India. I request the educated people of India to wake up and say goodbye to communalism otherwise, we will go against our own Hindu philosophy of peaceful co-existence.

Mr. Feku (Everybody can say proudly Mr. feku to you, because you are undisputed champion in this field) you are saying emergency is a dark day in Indian democracy, what about massacre of thousands of innocent people at Gujarat? It’s not a dark day in Indian history, thousands of innocent people have lost their life and the justice has not been served their families. Even Vajepayee wanted you to resign. But you have survived just by licking L.K. Advani’s feet.
Just for the political sake you are criticizing congress. You might have forgotten Mr. Lal bahadur shastri was the first railway minister who resigned from office following a train accident as he felt moral responsibility. Didn’t you feel the moral responsibility when more than thousand innocents lost their life.
In one sentence Feku’s government is totally failure in all the fields. Now in order to divert the attention of the common citizens Feku is bringing up mandir, cow and other unrelated issues. Feku can you tell me how many poll related promises have you fulfilled?
Feku’s government is performing only on social media and paid Indian media. In reality it is a big big ZERO

Modi, you call this democracy. Whoever is opposing you, you snub them with all legal and illegal means by exploiting state agencies like retired judge Karnan who was about to spill beans about you and call them anti nationals and asking them to go to Pakistan. Those who are sucking up to you are innocent however grave criminals they are. Even emergency would have been better than this dictatorship and goonda raj with murderers and criminals around.

Political developments that led to imposition of emergency in 1975 are still enigmatic...
    Many have their own versions...
However it was the most unfortunate decision taken...
Greedy government officials had a field day everyday...
Even small villages reeled under unacceptable duress...
I wonder why at all Indiraji took such a step....
    Never again...
We are all proud of free and responsible India...
