Cong netas think am an obstacle, let me quit: Faleiro

Panaji, Jun 24 (TOI): Two months after he first resigned from the post of Goa Congress unit chief, Luizinho Faleiro on Friday sent another letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi asking her to relieve him of the responsibilities, "as some MLAs feel that my continuation creates a hindrance to the formation of the government".

Congress sources said the party high command is likely to accept Faleiro's resignation and the lone Rajya Sabha MP from Goa, Shantaram Naik whose tenure will end next month, is likely to be his successor.

Faleiro, who is also the Navelim MLA, in his letter said that "a couple of senior leaders" had publicly stated that Congress would not win more than two seats in the 2017 assembly polls.

"Now, these same leaders are claiming that they can form the government in the present scenario," he wrote.

There had been rumblings in the party after Congress, despite emerging as the single largest party with 17 seats, failed to form the government in March.

"If you may recollect, I had predicted that we would get the required seats in the 2017 assembly elections as opposed to the 6 seats we won in 2012. We would have actually got 21 seats had it not been for the misjudgment and misguidance of some senior Congressmen," Faleiro said in his letter.

Two months ago, Faleiro had submitted his resignation letter to Gandhi who had declined to accept it. On June 5, the former chief minister called on Gandhi and pressed that his resignation be accepted.

There has been speculations in the political circles that a group of Congress functionaries are looking at a possibility of getting back their 'prodigal sons' to form an alternative dispensation, which observers dismissed as very remote.

Faleiro, in his letter, also recollected his contribution to the party, "...not only did we rebuild the party organization from scratch but also rebuilt every Congress block, districts, PCC, frontal organisation and other departments. This led us to gain the Goan voters confidence"

Faleiro has also informed Gandhi that Goa Congress would get a new office premises. "I am happy to inform you that I have executed the sale deed for our prestigious district offices in north and south Goa and also signed an agreement to purchase our state headquarters at Panaji in Patto Plaza, which will be operational in December 2017," he wrote.
