Bengaluru, Jun 22: Editor of weekly Kannada tabloid, 'Hi Bangalore', Ravi Belagere, and Anil Raj, editor of 'Yelahanka Voice' publication, were handed down a year each of imprisonment and Rs 10,000 each as fine by Assembly Speaker, K B Koliwad. He made this announcement in the Assembly on Wednesday June 21.

Shiraguppa MLA, Nagaraj, had filed complaint against the editor of 'Hi Bangalore' for publishing derogatory material about him, with the privileges committee of the assembly. The committee, which investigated the complaint, recommended imposition of a year of imprisonment on Ravi Belagere in addition to a fine of Rs 10,000. During the consideration of the committee's recommendations, legislators from all parties supported the recommendation and urged the chair to implement the same. As the house approved the recommendation, Koliwad announced his decision.

Editor of 'Yelahanka Voice' newspaper, Anil Raj, was facing the allegation of publishing a series of defamatory reports against Yelahanka MLA, S R Vishwanath. Therefore he faced complaint about breach of privilege.

The privileges committee headed by Kimmane Ratnakar had recommended a year of imprisonment and fine of Rs 10,000 in the case of Anil Raj. MLA, Vishwanath, requested the house to uphold this recommendation. He said that editors of some publications have been in the habit of publishing unsubstantiated reports which compromise the dignity of the house. Government's chief whip, Ashok Pattana, and other members supported this demand. The speaker, after getting the nod of members, announced the decision to impose punishment as recommended.

It is a very important decision.

It takes years of hard work to build credibility. A journalist specially with visual media, can destroy it in a second. Therefore, it is very important to ensure the facts are incorruptible and stories are told with truth.

These days the noble profession of journalism is corrupted with greedy journalists, whose job is to twist fact and narrate stories. We have seen one who is running a channel. If they do that they are in a very lucrative and wealthy position. A honest man can loose all his hopes and families can be destroyed. Even-if at a later date, the same channel even declares publicly him as innocent, there will be nobody to believe him.

I have no idea of the stories the journalist carried or either the person they spoke against. But, if it is a fact that they twisted facts to make it a story, then they really deserve it.

So it is a important decision.

Can he impose or just make a recommendation to court for implementation??? Let us see now....how the media association will react for this action!!! I am sure most of them will not talk because it's imposed by CONGiss Govt...had it been by NDA or BJP Govt....at least 3 to 5 channels would have started their campaign near Karnataka Assembly now under that banner..."Freedom of Press"

I didn't expected from a party which is day n night crying intolerance people voice suppressed press freedom under threat. Where is VP, he need to answer this. During national herald inauguration he spoke a lot. When promoters of a company raided for financial irregularities this party rallied behind NDTV. Now through assembly they target media journalist.
