Anil Kumble withdraws as head coach of Indian team

New Delhi, Jun 20 (IANS): Legendary leg-spinner Anil Kumble has decided against continuing as the head coach of the Indian cricket team, it was announced on Tuesday.

"The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirms that Anil Kumble has withdrawn his services as the head coach for the senior India men's team," BCCI said in a statement.

"While the Cricket Advisory Committee had endorsed an extension to his tenure as head coach, Anil Kumble has decided not to continue in the post," it added.

According to reports, Kumble, whose one-year tenure was scheduled to end at the conclusion of the ICC Champions Trophy in England and Wales, stayed back in England instead of travelling with the team for their next assignment in the West Indies.

The Indian team on Tuesday left for the West Indies, where they are to play five One-day Internationals (ODI) and a solitary T20 International.

BCCI Acting Secretary Amitabh Choudhary appreciated Kumble for his successful stint with the Indian team, especially in the Test format. With Kumble as coach, India regained the top-ranked status in the five-day version of the game with consecutive victories over the West Indies, New Zealand, Bangladesh, England and Australia.

He also coached the One-Day International (ODI) side to the final of the Champions Trophy in England. In the final, India suffered a huge 180-run loss to Pakistan.

"We wish to place on record our sincere appreciation for the immense contribution by Anil Kumble to the team which enabled India to attain the No.1 Test position," Choudhary said.

"Indian cricket needs his continued contribution in various capacities and wishes him all the best in his future endeavour."

Earlier, reports of a rift between skipper Virat Kohli and Kumble had emerged, prompting the BCCI to advertise for the post of head coach just before the team landed in England for the Champions Trophy.

Sadly the superhero culture in the Indian team has once again come to the fore. It happened when Greg Chappell was the coach. When Chappell tried to bring in professionalism, discipline, equality and team spirit into the team the super heroes like Tendulkar, Ganguly, Harbhajan and Zaheer Khan ganged up against him. Now the same thing is repeating itself. It is shocking that Kohli and some of his gang do not like a dedicated and celebrated person as Kumble as coach. He has given his all for cricket and his contributions to Indian cricket are second to none. It would have been good in the long term interests of Indian cricket for the BCCI to support Kumble and throw our Kohli and any one else who had reservations about Kumble. True that the Indian team's performance would have taken a temporary dive in the ensuing months. but in the long run it would have been great for the team and this rotten super hero culture would have been taken care of once and for all. Is anyone doubting that in a 1 Billion plus cricket crazy country, that you cannot find a replacement for a Kohli or any of these self declared super heroes?

If the news coming out are true, it looks Kohil's ego is bigger than Indian cricket. Just because Kohli's ego do not permit him to get coached under a very experienced, technically very sound and most intelligent cricketer like Kumble, Kumble is being shunted out. Do we need a puppet coach who will nod head to what captain says? Kohli might be a great batsmen but he has a long way to go and get himself matured as a captain. If he allows his ego to prevail over his skills then probably he is damaging his own future. But we do not want him to damage Indian cricket.

BCCI has done a mistake when it made Kumble as coach. A coach must be an all round player. Secondly we have to retire all junk players from team. 70% team should be youngsters. We have numbers of young players but we have to retire Dhawan, Rohit, Koholi, Jade ja, Dhoni and some.

Sad news but we are all in the same boat. Pakistan team won because they eat beef but Indian team not. The effect is losing against the beef eating team, and also withdrawals.

First Kohli should be removed from his captaincy.
His way of handling his emotions is very hopeless.

It is very sad that Anil Kumble had to withdraw as the head coach of the Indian cricket team. However, it does not come as a complete surprise considering the eccentric and arrogant behaviour of Virat Kohli. I have the highest regard for him as a batsman but his boorish mannerisms leave a lot to be desired. On the other hand, Anil Kumble has got along extremely well with all his team mates during his playing days and has been regarded as a true gentleman both on and off the field. A big loss to Indian cricket.

Yes. Let us also not forget Kumble wanted us to bat if we won the toss, but Kohli decided against his will and decided to field.
