'Gaza Street' in Kasargod catches attention of intelligence agencies

Kasargod, Jun 20: A street in Kerala's Thuruthi ward under Kasaragod municipality which was named ‘Gaza’ last month, has caught the attention of intelligence agencies.

Gaza, a conflict-ridden strip of land between Israel and Egypt is a self-governing Palestinian territory. Though there are claims that the street in Kerala is named in solidarity with those “targeted” by Israeli authorities, intelligence agencies are not amused due to its proximity to Padane village.

Since 2016, as many as 21 youngsters reported missing from Padane village are believed to be inducted in Islamic State’s militant army in Syria.

Though municipality funds have been used for renaming, Municipal Chairman Beefathima Ibrahim has told media persons that she is not aware of such a street in her jurisdiction and plans to investigate the issue and rectify the matter.

The renaming was done last month in presence of Kasaragod district Panchayat president  AGC Basheer said, "I was not the person who was supposed to inaugurate the street as the area falls under the municipality's jurisdiction. But I had to step in at the last moment."

However, Kasaragod municipality opposition leader P Ramesh says that names of streets are being changed discreetly without bringing it to the notice of municipal council. “It is a deliberate attempt to change the names of various areas in Kasaragod. If the names are brought to the notice of municipal council, a debate will arise and such names will be rejected,” he said.

Gaza is not the first place in Kerala to have a controversial name. In Kerala’s Malappuram district, the Tipu Sultan beach was renamed as Saddam Beach after former Iraq president Saddam Hussein. The renaming was an act of solidarity after the 1991 Gulf War.

It is also interesting to note that Kerala is not the only state to have a street named Gaza. Downtown Srinagar is also known as the Gaza Strip of Kashmir. In Kashmir the place got the name as Kashmiris believe that their struggle is similar to the people in Palestine.

    Rahil,
Its only the people like you who are calling it a fake history. It's people like you who are trying to make a tyrant, a freedom fighter. You dont have to go to the british records to find out what type of man tipu was. Just read his own records of his exploits.

    JNK,

Would you say same if a Hindu/Christian ruler would have massacred your ancestors 200 years ago?

Yes, Tippu is a tyrant for the ones who became the hurdle in his fight against the mighty and shrewd British.
India would have been an Independent country if the other Indian kings had supported him in the 17th Century.
    But who cared!!
All others including the Nizams, Marathas, Kodavas were too frightened of losing the battle and their lands and betrayed the TIGER.
The political mess is the country is just the extension of above mentioned 3 ruling kingdoms.

    Ganesh Shetty,

If you think that after driving out the British, Tipu would have established a democracy ........then my friend, you are ignorant.

Please read history and then come to talk to me. He massacred thousands of Hindus and christians. Basically waged jihad on unbelievers.

India is what it is today due to British. They brought the whole India under a single rule. English language became a tool to communicate between the people who used different languages. If you dont agree with me on this point then you are free to counter it.

And another thing, what makes you think that the rulers who ruled over india would have come together and would have relinquished their wealth and power and would have formed democracies?

The fake History of Massacring the Hindus and Christians was a propaganda against TIPPU by the British Army again their age old Ploy of Divide and Rule policy. Tippu was a tiger and British were afraid of him. He had high level of ministers in his court and most of then were Hindus. So this history itself is false on falls on its face. How come so many Loyal Hindus work on the highest level when their king is against their religion?

Divide and Rule Policy of British. Tippu was and will remain as Tiger of Mysore.

They just cannot live with others. As a bank manager of a nationalized bank in Kasargod in the 1980s my uncle had to vacate his quarters after human feces wrapped in newspaper used to be thrown into his compound by neighbors of another community. Even women could not venture into the market alone without husbands. It is strange that all this is never brought out by the media on the real communal people.

..If political situation not reversed in KERALA/WB, within a decade we will see a catastrophe..its ok to hate BJP/RSS, but dont let these development get away before its too late...two days back another ISIS recruit Shajeer magalasseri was killed in Afhanistan, media almost blackout news..nearly a hundred people left India, several caught in turkey/afghanistan and many active & inspiring sleeper cell..Its not for for BEEF/GODHRA/BABRI..they may use it as pretext, as they did it with christians in ME countries..there is no reason to think they will target only others, truth is in infront of us..

Minority appeasement government have ruined our country. They are always protecting one section of the people thus leading to divide and mistrust. Minority community have overtaken and become majority thus have started dictating. You all know, how these people are terrorizing all around the world. So folks, be careful about their motives by naming or renaming.

Where ever they are , its problems. They are only 'peace loving' when they are in minority. As they grow the demand increases, like Halal meat, Shariya law , special attire , separate educational institutions . Further growth of their population they will provoke other religion , this will result in the place being called as 'sensitive'. The Europe is now paying a heavy price for housing these people. Terrorism is slowly becoming an everyday affair. and the world is acknowledging it.
