London: Vijay Mallya booed with 'chor, chor' chants at Oval

London, Jun 11 (PTI): Fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya was today heckled by cricket fans who chanted "chor, chor" (thief, thief) as he arrived to watch the India vs South Africa Champions Trophy match at The Oval cricket ground here.

The 61-year-old chief of the now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines, who has been living in self-imposed exile in Britain since last year and is facing extradition proceedings in UK courts, walked speedily past Indian fans outside the stadium.

"Chor gaya chor (there goes a thief) and chor, chor (thief, thief)," were among the chants that could be heard from the crowds.

Mallya, whose Kingfisher Airlines allegedly owes more than Rs 9,000 crore to various banks, had left India on March 2016. The UK’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) is currently working on extradition proceedings against him based on evidence provided by Indian authorities.

The next hearing in the case is scheduled at Westminster Magistrates' Court in London on Tuesday.

Last week, Mallya had caused a stir by his attendance of the India vs Pakistan match in Birmingham after which he had said on Twitter that he would be attending all India matches in the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy.

"Wide sensational media coverage on my attendance at the IND v PAK match at Edgbaston. I intend to attend all games to cheer the India team," he had tweeted.

He also made an appearance at captain Virat Kohli’s fundraising dinner in London to raise funds for anti-human trafficking charity Justice and Care.

"Virat or his foundation never invited Mallya at the function," a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BBCI) official had claimed.

In April, Mallya was arrested by Scotland Yard on fraud allegations, triggering an official extradition process in the British courts.

He attended a central London police station for his arrest and was released on conditional bail a few hours later after providing a bail bond worth 650,000 pounds, assuring the court of abiding by all conditions associated with extradition proceedings, such as the surrender of his passport and a ban on him possessing any travel documents.

I dont call him CHOR.. CHOR..! Why anybody call him CHOR ? He has taken loan but not repaid. He offered to repay Rs.6500 crores when he was in India. But Bank people rejected his offer. According to me Bank Officers who gave him loan (our money means tax payers money and depositors money) without any surety should be called as Chors. they should be punished first. Bank is not their fathers property to give crores of ruppees like this.

Yes, Mallya is going through a crisis but this is not the way he should be humiliated in public. These were the same people begging for jobs in his companies and now booing at him. Let the law take its own course. We Kannadigas should stand by him at this time of crisis.

Mallya is a gentleman. He has agreed to settle the principle amount Rs 7000 crore without interest and settle the matter. The Government should have collected that money. Rs 7000 crore is not a small amount. UPA government is responsible for giving him huge loans and indirectly got the kickback.

None of the airlines in the world making profit. Government of India is pumping Rs 50000 crores to Air India to keep it alive.

    Dr. Shetty, Mangalore
Mallya did not run away with money from us or you but the money he owed to our country that was lent to him with a good faith that he would return it. When he defaulted from making repayment and escaped from India, our country lost such an enormous amount of Rs.9,000 crores, not to mention the interest amount. I don’t think he has an iota of remorse for cheating the banks he owes as he still lives a lavish lifestyle in the UK, partying and enjoying life. Can you imagine if a common man defaults in his payment towards his loan? I am not talking about billions of Rupees like Mallya owes banks but a few lakhs.
Don’t ask stupid questions like “did he run away with your money”. You may be feeling bad only if someone runs away with money owed to you but most of us feel when someone runs away with money owed to our country. Remember, the money owed to the country is the money owed to the public.

    Sir,
    You need correct your facts.
Malya has not borrowed the loans. Kingfisher Airlines Limited has borrowed the loans. Banks have lent taking the brand image as a collateral, they also have considered the good performance of the allied companies.
KAL bombed because of the foul play by then aviation ministry and it defaulted its payments. What is the law in the country where you reside Sir? Is the CEO held accountable for the loans taken by a bankrupt entity?

And the loan amount is only 4000 crores, banks have calculated interests as per their own calculations and arrived at 9000 crores. In fact Malya offered to pay back 4000 crores which was rejected by the banks.

None of the courts outside India will hold Malya accountable for the debts of KAL. Indian banks can try some money laundering cases on him, which they have resorted recently.

To all those cheap Indian in UK, please remember that you are living in a country which is 'King' of chor. They have stolen almost everything from India when they were ruling us. Why don't you all call them chor living in their country? Banks have lend him money for business and he couldn't repay it as his business failed. He didn't stole money from anyone. There are many chors' in India who have actually stolen public money and living like a King in India. Grow up Indians living in UK!

    Dr.Shetty,

'' please remember that you are living in a country which is 'King' of chor. They have stolen almost everything from India when they were ruling us. Why don't you all call them chor living in their country?''

I find it amusing that people always resort to saying that the wealth of India was stolen. This idea is preposterous to begin with. First of all there was no India that we know of back then. There were seperate kingdoms. If the british did not bring whole india under its rule there would be smaller kingdoms, similar to Nepal or Bhutan. Wealth was accumulated by its rules. If British would never been here, the wealth would have still be held by the rulers families. I find it shocking that people who bash British dont consider this fact. Most of the people lived like slaves.... they still do in many parts of our country still now.

India is what it is because of British rule. The British unified the whole India which made it possible for the people to come together for a common cause i.e, fight for independence.

Now coming back to topic of Mallya... i cant believe that you and your buddies that liked your comment are defending Mallya. You are blaming politicians. Well let me remind your that Mallya was a politician. Did you forget that??? Mallya defrauded the banks there is no other excuse for it. actually, i dont mind him defrauding the banks cause they deserve it for being stupid enough to give loans to an airline company that never made a profit, but what i mind is that his company did not pay its employees.
