Mangaluru, Jun 11: Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts received good rains on Saturday June 10 and overnight, continuing through the morning of Sunday June 11. The skies throughout coastal districts are cloudy with no signs of sunny weather for the day. After a dry and parched summer in April and May, the rains have come as a blessings, turning the scenic beauty of the coastal districts serene, and the fields, lush green.

Sullia witnessed heavy rains while Mangaluru city, Madanthyar, Beltangady, Bantwal, Moodbidri, Vittal, Puttur, Bajpe, Ullal, Haleyangady, Mukka and Punjalkatte received medium rains in Dakshina Kannada districts.

Udupi, Manipal, Karkala, Moodubelle, Brahmavar, Shirva, Kaup, Kota, Kumbhashi, Padukone, Kollur, Byndoor, Navunda, Maravanthe, Gangolli, Nada, Hemmady, Hosangadi, Thekkatte, Kundapur, Koteshwar and Siddapur in Udupi districts received moderate to heavy rains.

Damage to properties and roads has been reported from several places in twin-districts.

The torrential rains and wind caused much damage in the city on Sunday. An enormous old tree got uprooted at Kunjibettu ward early in the morning. It leant on a Nagabana and caused damage to a nearby grocery shop as well. The store is owned by Rehman Saheb.

Rehman said he lost lacs of rupees due to the damage, and the exact amount is yet to be known.

The tree was on a narrow road. If the tree fell during day, there were chances of injury for pedestrians and motorists.

The power supply was also disrupted in many places due to broken power lines.

When it rains, City Municipality Council starts work of repairing roads. The best example in Udupi city, is the National Highway 66, which was completely washed out near Karavali bypass, due to heavy downpour. There have been complaints from the public for five days on, about the numerous potholes which have been exposing the vehicles to danger on the national highway. But it was neglected by the city municipality council, as the road comes under National Highway Authority of India and the council pins the mistake on NHAI. The plight of the highway is proof of cheap quality materials used by road contractors.

On Sunday morning, locals and the media persons drew the attention of district in charge Pramod Madhwaraj to the weathered road. Immediately responding to the problem facing by the public, the filling work has was started, in the morning itself. Udupi Tahsildar Maheshchandra also visited the spot and inspected the ongoing work.

Floods on roads due to non-completion of work were witnessed from BC Road to Kundapur.

"KaLape Kamagarike" is evident by looking at the pathetic conditions of roads. All roads in coastal districts must be concrete roads to stand the weather condition.

I was amazed to see the man and young girl on a scooter (7th pic).

The girl does not seem to be wearing a helmet. And is holding her bag, rather than the scooter.

On a wet road the brakes do not easily apply, and the vehicle can go skidding - which also means that other vehicles that could potentially come very close to the scooter due to higher speed etc may not be able to come to a complete stop on time.

Accidents are always plentiful on wet roads.

Absolutely amazed about the lack of road ethics displayed by some people in/on their vehicles!

By looking at these photos.. i can understand how much money politicians make from sanctioned budget of the roadworks. Not properly constructed pavements etc. etc.. When the rain comes again they get money from the gov't to repair and again some portion goes to their pocket.... God save
