Mangaluru, Jun 9: In yet another achievement in its long list of milestones, the city's renowned St Aloysius College (Autonomous) has been ranked 23 in the list of best colleges in India for science education. The survey was conducted by the well-known The Week magazine.

Among the colleges in Karnataka, St Aloysius is ranked 4th best for science education. It is also the only college from coastal Karnataka to make it to the list.

Recently, the College was ranked 44th best in India in overall rankings in the National Institutional Ranking Framework announced by the HRD ministry.

The news should come as no surprise to those familiar with St Aloysius College. The College has everything a science student needs for advancement in the field, from well-equipped labs, dedicated science blocks to several courses and PhD programmes.

Speaking to daijiworld, principal Fr Dr Praveen Martis, who himself is a PhD holder in chemistry, said, "The Week conducted survey of major colleges at the national level, and shortlisted St Aloysius College. Then they cross-checked the functioning of the College, along with its research activities and total progress. Before declaring the rankings, they asked for a detailed report from the College.

"St Aloysius College has a total of 15 undergraduation combinations in science - 8 in physical science and 7 in biological science," he added.

"The 'Star Status' by the department of biotechnology, government of India, which the College received last year enabled the College to progress in the rankings.

"The College has completed current year's admissions in the science department and more than 450 students have joined the basic science courses," he informed.

Expressing happiness over the new rankings, he said, "The credit goes to students and the faculty. The ranking is an appreciation of their hard work, research and other academic activities. Students and parents are giving first preference to our College because of the Star Status that it has earned. We can see the results of this Star Status and rankings during our admissions. I congratulated the entire science department on this achievement."

Congratulations to my Alma Mater for keeping up its standards and getting recognized as one of the best colleges not just in Mangalore but in the entire country. The commitment and passion of our Jesuit fathers along with the entire staff has to be applauded especially at a time when education has become pure commercial and these institutions need to fight with new private institutions that just strive for short term gains. St. Aloysius has always strived to uplift society through education and has changed the lives of so many under-privileged students who otherwise would not afford this quality of education. Kudos for maintaining the quality and standards all through these years. I am so pleased to be an alumnus of this great institution.
