Sonia Gandhi may step down as Congress President by Oct 15

New Delhi, Jun 6 (PTI): Sonia Gandhi may step down from the Congress presidentship, paving the way for Rahul Gandhi's possible elevation when the party holds its internal elections by October 15.

The Congress Working Committee (CWC), the party's highest decision-making body, today approved the schedule for internal elections under which the party has to complete the exercise by October 15.

In her speech at the CWC meeting, Sonia Gandhi exhorted partymen to strengthen the organisation and complete the organisational polls with "speed and sincerity".

"We must strengthen our organisation. The ongoing organisational elections must be completed with the utmost speed and sincerity," she said at the meeting, ahead of the CWC approving the poll schedule.

Asked whether the issue of elevation of Rahul Gandhi was discussed at the meeting, senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad replied in the negative.

"The schedule for organisational elections has been cleared by the CWC," Azad said, adding that Rahul's elevation was not specifically discussed.

The CWC members had in the last meeting in November unanimously expressed "strong sentiment" for Rahul's elevation for the first time and may take it further.

At the November 7 meeting, all members, including former prime minister Manmohan Singh and senior leader A K Antony, had made a strong pitch for Rahul to take over the reins of the party.

The Congress president has created a record by being at the helm of the 130-year-old organisation for nearly two decades since late Sitaram Kesri's ouster by the CWC in early 1998. Rahul was appointed party vice president in January 2013 at Congress's brainstorming session in Jaipur.

Congress party position (debacle) going to be bad to worse.
Rahul in all his actions, exposure, leadership, personality still remains an 'amateur'
There do not seem to be any 'Fire brand' charactors in entire congress senior party members or leadership. Let us wait and watch how Rahul baba handles the situation for the days to come.
A strong oposition is necessary to safeguard democracy and secular norms. People have alreaady realized the power in ruling parties hands.

These days no one party is saviour of people, all parties have chors, either they manipulate dharma for their votes or manipulate minorities for vote bank.

Parties only know how to make money and how to give lucrative contracts to their bhakts, this is their in BJP and Congress and other parties too.

If Rahul is not a vocal leader he can be a mass leader fighting for good causes.
my leaders in BJP are hell bent dividing the country and communities, what a shamefull act.
however i hope some viveka will set the mindsets of BJP people and stop manipulating using RSS and half baked quasi organaizations.

It does not make any difference as Rahul is already like President of Congress Party. In order to come back strongly, they need to find innovative ways. Dalaal culture should stop and genuine members should get opportunity.
First of all stop going behind Modi, BJP, Beef, Religion etc.......
Instead of blaming every project of Modi government, come up with alternate plans of your own.
Your biggest draw back was corruption. Admit it and come up with a strong action plan to stop corruption.
These are something people expect the grand old party to focus on instead of doing politics like Kejriwal.

Whatever change envisaged in leadership set up of the party, looking at present, there is no scope for revival for the party due to non change in its priorities and outlook.i.e.,communal appeasement and corruption. These two factors only killed Congress party in 2014 election and not leadership factor.India belongs to all where Hindu population is dominant.Great damage done Nehru and company can corrected only when party sees all equally........there is no other shortcut.

    2. Retirement is rarely on minds of our Netas - This is just to promote her unqualified son to the post. even Mr. Mulayam did same in UP, Farooq Abdulla in J&K

J.anata, as if you have given your complete address. My identity has nothing to do here. I'm not spreading hatred. I speak out what I feel is right. Once a upon a time I was a big fan of Modi. I had only positive updates about Modi on my FB. Now after seeing how our country is not progressing I feel that was a big mistake supporting bjp. Deleted my account on FB. Feel ashamed for supporting Modi. All politicians are hand in gloves benefiting themselves.

Harish, What about our Modiji. Isn't he wasting our money by his foreign trips. That is also indirect loot, enjoying common man's tax money. He has hardly got any business to India. The GDP of our country as fallen like crazy. Petrol price have still not come down. This is all because he needs funding for his tours. Also now to hide his failure, beef ban issue has been highlighted. How about Modi's handshake with his counterpart who I'm sure eat, or his sharing the lunch or dinner table with his counterpart who are served beef on the same table shared by Modi. Isn't it hypocrisy.
