Bengaluru: BJP demands farm loan waiver, warns of stir in state

Bengaluru, Jun 6 (PTI): Opposition BJP Leader Jagadish Shettar today demanded that the Karnataka government announce farm loan waiver in the wake of the severe drought and warned of an agitation if the demand was not conceded.

Calling the government "anti-farmer" for not heeding the demand of farmers, he accused it of inefficiency in handling the drought situation.

"BJP and its leaders are touring the state to study the drought situation. Everywhere farmers are demanding farm loan waiver. If the government doesn't announce the loan waiver, we will stage a protest with lakhs of people at Vidhana Soudha (the state secretariat)," Shettar said.

"Agitation is inevitable if the government doesn't agree," he said during a short term discussion about the drought situation in the Assembly.

Shettar questioned as to why the government is not able to take a firm decision to write off farm loans despite such a severe drought.

"Farm loan waiver will give the much-needed respite to farmers who are in distress and will build self-confidence in them," he said.

Calling the government "anti-farmer", Shettar questioned as to why the Chief Minister has lost "compassion" towards farmers.

He pointed out that the Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra governments have waived farm loan worth Rs 36,000 crore and 30,000 crores respectively.

State governments there have done it on their own and the Centre did not come to their rescue as being projected, he said.

"Why our Chief Minister who is in the office for the fifth year unable to do what has been done by UP and Maharashtra CM's?" he asked.

He questioned the government for pointing fingers at the Centre on loan waiver and said the present central government has released highest relief under Calamity Relief Fund (CRF) in the last 10-15 years.

Referring to the "failures" of the government in drought management like providing employment and drinking water to those in distress, the former chief minister said NREGA wages are not being paid within seven days, resulting in farmers' exodus from their villages in search of jobs.

Once Janardhan Reddy and his cronies surrender all the money that they have looted from the state, then we can waive off all the loans that these poor farmers owe and additionally also grant them new loans to boost the agriculture sector. Therefore Mr. Shettar first launch an agitation to get all the looted money back. Everyone will appreciate you.

Loan waiver is not a good sign for any economy and not healthy to the government. I do understand the difficulties farmers are undergoing but there are other steps/methods to help them. If state BJP is so concerned let them contribute money to the farmers from their Party Fund. People are smart these days to understand these stupid statements/protests which political parties do ( applicable to all parties).

BJP goverment is soft on Mallya who owns 9000 crores to banks. First bring back the defualter Mallya. He was seen enjoying at ENgland in cricket match. Poor farmers here suffer. High time goverment support farmers who suffer so much in life. Their produce price is down and they suffer , I feel the BJP goverment at centre must identify the farmers who are in distress and help them. The farmer produces food for us Without farmers there will be no life. Farming is an essntial part of life and farmers must eb protected. Thats my view in this issue!

    Mr. Shutter
Are you speaking in your sleep? Open your eyes and look at MP. Six farmers are killed as police opens fire at farmers’ protest. We Kannadigaas don't get fooled so easily.

Also, don't try to provoke innocent farmers and put their lives in danger.

Shetter has no right to speak about farmers.
Did you wave farmers loans during your tenure.
Or did Yeddy or Saddu waver the loans of farmers.

    If not then shut up.

Ask the Cow Government to issue sufficient funds to the state for waving of farmer loans.

Good thought shettar. I would like to remind you that you didn’t make any serious efforts to waive of the farmers loan when you were chief minister.

I would like to also bring you attention that FEKU PM has promised 15-20 lakhs to everybody from the black money. Now feku PM has forgotten his promise. Why don’t you start a nationwide agitation to remind feku PM about his pre poll promise?
Why you guys do think about people only when you guys are on opposition?

Stop playing pseudo Good Samaritan to farmers. What your party in Maharashtra doing for draught hit farmers?????. Ruling by unruly means is BJP trade mark. Draught is not something new. There are other measures to counter draught hit areas than loan waivers. No wonder you are a sanctuary for all professional goons and criminals for your agitation, stir, protest and bundhs.

shetterji you are taken a right issue after a long time. but it should not a political issue should only concerned with farmer,. In Maharashtra farmers agitation is going on since 6 days mumbai is much effected due to this. In state of MP today only police fired farmers agitation and two farmers are killed you might also seen how tamil nadu farmers taken skulls of of suicide farmers went to delhi. All Indian farmers are in difficult situation. you can request and take up with the central govt. to pass bill for waiver of farm loan or instruct state govts to that effect. do you know in two years central budget allocation of the farm sector decreased and why now your crocodile tear because election in state is approaching?
