Free at last: Youths forced to work as shepherds in Saudi arrive in Mangaluru

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SB)

Mangaluru, May 27: Relief and joy hung in the air as Puneeth and Damodar, who were stranded in Saudi Arabia after a recruitment agency allegedly cheated them with false assurance of lucrative jobs, walked into freedom as they arrived at Mangaluru International Airport here on Saturday May 27 morning.

Puneeth from Ganjimutt and Damodar from Mulky had gone to Saudi Arabia after they were promised jobs as painters with good salaries, but on reaching there, they found to their utter shock that they been duped by the city-based recruitment agency. They were forced to work as shepherds in Saudi Arabia, and after their employer seized their passports, they were left stranded. After daijiworld and other media reported about their plight, the Indian Social Forum (ISF) stepped in to rescue them, and after much efforts and legal recourse, finally managed to free the youths from bondage.

Puneeth and Damodar travelled from Saudi Arabia to Dubai by FlyDubai flight, and then by Jet Airways to Mangaluru. They reached Mangaluru airport at around 8 am, where they were welcomed by social worker Tauseef, members of ISF and family members.

Speaking to daijiworld, a relieved Damodar said, "We are thankful to the Almighty and members of the Indian Social Forum. We do not want to recall the horrible days in the Saudi desert. Only when we boarded the flight back from Saudi did we feel that we are finally free. During the last five days, ISF members gave us shelter in their houses. They treated us as their own family members. They were in constant touch with the Saudi labour court and the government officials for the last three weeks. Their efforts have given us freedom. Now we want to see our family members, relatives, and friends.

"We do not want to go abroad for work any more. We will work in our own place. We thank daijiworld and other media who stood by us in our difficult times," he added.

ISF member Ayaz who is on vacation made special efforts in the release of the youths, coordinating with the Saudi unit of ISF as well as Puneeth and Damodar's families back home.

ISF members Fayaz Uppinangady and others were present.

My experience tells me that those who work for British or some such standard companies, one can be safe. They let you keep your passport, they pay you reasonably well, and even provide accommodation. On the contrary, if you go to work for the local companies, one would do well to think twice before venturing such a gimmick.

More than 30 years ago, while working for a oil company in Oman, my job was to drive to locations of oil field which are absolute deserts. Once, at Lekwair (now , Al Khuwair), a border to Abu Dhabi from Oman I met a shepherd who was an Indian. He is in Arab Beduin dress. He was not prepared to disclose his identity. Somehow, he disclosed his identity.

He lives like a Beduin and looks after the owners camels and goats. He is happy, getting a reasonably good salary (RO 150) , leave after 5 years. All living expenses are taken care . But has to live like a Beduin and talk like a Beduin.

Thanks God that, two innocents were returned safely to motherland..
Good work from ISF & god bless for their generosity.
I would like share some points who seeking to come abroad in present days, now a days conditions were not up to the mark in abroad due to various crises.. Just try to utilize your skills in motherland & keep safe yourself from fake agents.. Abroad is not heaven & here there is no money plant, so that you can pick & send the currency notes to motherland.. Its tough to survive for new commers & if you don't have any relative (sometime relatives acts unknown in abroad) for get job by influence, god knows their situation. Above is one of good example for thirsty job seekers for abroad. As we all knows, aboard person looks very posh while coming from abroad for vacation with new outfits, sunglass & perfume smell. But most of them were used first time by themselves itself while retuning from abroad & many were buy from Duty free too.. Please don't measure the person from outfit, perfume smell, selfies in front of posh cars or malls & all.
Our India was best, is best & always its would best & safer.. Jai Hind..
