Bengaluru, May 23: In a tragic incident, a Central Armed Reserve (CAR) police constable attempted suicide and poisoned his wife and two young kids.

The incident came to light when a relative of the family visited the residence in the police quarters at Hegde Nagar on Tuesday morning.

As there was no response, he alerted the police who rushed to the place to witness the dead bodies and the constable battling for life.

"City Armed Reserve (CAR) constable S. Subhash Chandra, 35, is in a critical condition at a private hospital, while his wife Veena, 28, daughter Manya, 3, and 18-month-old son Prithvi were found dead at his house in the city's northeast suburb," according to city Deputy Commissioner of Police P SHarsha.

"We suspect Chandra consumed food mixed with rat poison after serving it to his wife and two kids for breakfast," said Harsha pointing out that the autopsy might lead to further clues.

Police have shifted the bodies to a state-run hospital for autopsy.

"The cause for the suicide attempt is not known. Priority is to save Chandra's life first and investigate the incident," said Harsha.

A case has been registered against Chandra under Sections 302 (murder), 309 (attempting suicide) and 306 (abetment of suicide) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Chandra, who hails from Belagavi, joined the police service in 2008 and was on deputation to the CAR.
