Thrissur: Malayalam actress' live FB protest could inspire tollgate commuters

Daijiworld Media Network - Thrissur

Thrissur, May 21: Many a time, protests by the public over issues like repeated traffic jams may go unnoticed or fail to reach the government. But a unique protest, that too by a celebrity, has grabbed eyeballs, with the video of the incident already going viral.

The Paliyekkara toll plaza here has been seeing frequent traffic blocks for years now. However, when a Malayalam actress got stuck in a jam on Saturday May 20 at the same spot, she decided to do something about it and staged a flash protest and took to Facebook to express her annoyance.

National Award winning actress Surabhi Laxman staged a strong and passionate protest against the toll plaza employees for mismanagement and harassment of commuters, which she said resulted in traffic jams.

Surabhi, who along with her team, was on her way to attend an event when she got stuck in the toll queue for hours. Going live on Facebook, she vented her ire against the toll plaza employees.

In the video, she also pointed out at a family who was on the way to hospital but like her and hundreds of others, stuck in the traffic.

The video also shows toll plaza staff getting into an argument with the actress.

It may be noted that the toll company here allows vehicles to go without paying toll fee if more than five vehicles queue up together, but the employees allegedly do not follow this rule.

The actress' live protest on Facebook has already garnered 8,92,000 views, 21,000 shares and over 6,000 comments. Her protest may inpire commuters elswhere also to stage such protests whenever they feel at the receiving end of toll or traffic mismanagement.

Public Private Partnership [PPP] model in developing national highways are extortion during daylight. You are paying hefty road tax for life while registering vehicles and this fund is intended for developing roads. National highways are given for lease to greedy private firms like Navayug Enterprises and they are employing goondas at tollgates to extract money from innocent commuters. At an average, a commuter has to spend Rs. 70/- for every 100 kilometers and this fall next to fuel expenses. National highway authority has hand-in-glove adjustment with these private players and any public resentments are consciously labelled as attack on tollgates. In fact, local people are excluded from paying toll fee but these arrogant toll gate staff flee everybody to boost their income. It is high time to introduce basic lesson public management to tool gate staff. Government on a quid-pro-quo arrangement will ensure that these private players recover ten times of their original investment within three to four years. Signs of a failing nation is visible everywhere and yet we claim incredible India!

Toll booths should be scrapped, when GST is introduced & vehicle tax to rise looting again is not right.
RFID enabled toll booths announced a year back but no implementation till now.
As years go by reduction in toll is necessary & not rise as is now practiced.
Providing infrastructure is the duty of the government providing it & causing public to pay for its inefficiency is the present norm it seems.

Lol to you.. There is no need to pay toll if your car /vehicle hasn't crossed yellow line which is around 100mtrs away if im not mistaken. I mean during traffic the toll station should allow vehicles to go without stopping them. This is the rule of NHAI.
