'Tampering claim wrong': EC exhibits successful functioning of EVMs, VVPATs

New Delhi, May 20 (PTI): The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Saturday demonstrated the working of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail System (VVPATs), while brushing aside the EVM tampering allegation.

Asserting that EVM tampering is a wrong allegation, BP Mishra, a technical officer of Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL), demonstrated as how the EVM and VVPAT work.

"EVM tampering is not possible and the allegations of its malfunctioning are wrong," Mishra told ANI.

ECIL employee Kharesh Yadav also demonstrated the procedure of EVM and VVPAT.

"These machines have a standalone printer. When any ballot button is pressed, a slip is generated carrying voter's and candidate's name," Yadav told ANI.

All future elections will be held with VVPAT along with EVMs across polling stations, to bring in transparency, said Naseem Zaidi, Chief of Election Commission.

Meanwhile, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which had alleged tampering with the EVMs during UP and Delhi civil polls, hit out at the EC for not holding hackathon challenge as it promised earlier.

"We hope the Election Commission tells us today when they will accept our (hackathon) challenge," AAP leader and Delhi Minister Gopal Rai said.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday said that the live demo of EVMs and VVPATs by the ECI will ensure credibility and the authenticity of the voting machine will be retained.

"It is Election Commission's duty to convince every citizens and every political party about the credibility of the EVM. It is between the election commission and the parties who are crying foul needlessly. I am sure that the Election Commission will ensure credibility and the authenticity of the EVMs will be retained," BJP leader S Prakash told ANI.

He said that certain parties were creating huge ruckus against EVM hacking to cover up their own lapses in winning over the mandate of the people and the Election Commission's demo will remove their doubt.

While earlier in the week, the poll panel had said it would offer an 'opportunity' to the political parties to prove that EVMs used in the recently held assembly polls were tampered with or can be tampered even with laid down safeguards.

The ECI also convened an all-party meeting over the issue of EVM and other electoral reforms.

In its communication to the presidents of all the seven national and 48 state political parties, the poll panel sent a status paper on EVMs and VVPAT.

Last month, sixteen opposition parties had urged the Election Commission to revert to the paper ballot system saying that the alleged tampering has created trust deficit in the credibility of the EVMs.

However, the poll body has been maintaining that EVMs are tamper proof and cannot be manipulated.

The Union Cabinet had given its nod to sanctioned funds of nearly Rs. 3,200 crore to procure more than 16 lakh VVPATs as sought by the Election Commission.

Besides EVMs, the meeting is expected to deliberate on making bribery in elections a cognisable offence, disqualification on framing of charges for the offences of bribery in elections and suggestions in VVPAT recount Rules.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), during a special session of the Delhi assembly, had conducted a live demonstration on how EVMs can be tampered with.

Reacting to the demonstration, the poll panel said the machine used to conduct live demonstration was a 'look-alike'' which was made to function in a 'tampered' manner.

The strong doubts expressed by various political parties regarding the non-tamperability of EVMs, and the EC's failure to respond to the Hackathon Challenge, is bound to create a further 'Trust Deficit' in the minds of the voting public.

In these days of hi-tech manipulation/installation of ransomware/hacking of almost each & every electronic device/computer-controlled devices (including suppression of vehicle emission levels), manufacturing and maintaining fool-proof/tamper-proof EVMs, may be a thing of the past. There may still be many undiscovered/unverified 'skeletons in the cupboard', in various areas of present day life.
    God alone knows the truth.

What if candidate himself voted for other candidates by mistake? Human beings makes mistakes.
Maximum you can do is, go to election commission, ask to audit their software from 3rd party. Make sure there are no software defects.

After AAP showed how EVMs can be hacked the election commission went & found the claim was true & that is the reason they don't want to give any party to touch these machines as they had promised, the government too is scared & might have adviced them not to, otherwise their successes in recent polls might come under the scanner of Supreme Court as well.
Even VVPATs cannot be trusted as it gives only a few seconds for the voter to see which party symbol got printed, the symbols of BJP & Congress are almost similar for those who have some problem in their eyes as ageing process hindering their verification.
Instead a voter needs to get them(printed symbol) & he has to deposit the same folded into a ballot box & get his ID back only after he puts it inside is a better solution.

Why EC commissioner is not allowing outside IT professional or technical officers to hack the same EVM rather than they doing it by them self. There is a saying "A dog praises his own tail". So EVM manufacturer is trying to prove and tell the world that EVM's cannot be hacked.

Ultimately democracy is bowing to peoples will. People still have doubt on EVMS. When computers worldwide can be hacked within miniutes what is so difficult to tamper EVMS. There is no system in the world that can not malfunction or tampered with. Why EC has not explained a candidates vote in BMC ELECTION GOT DISAPPEARED?.

This is a valid point and till date the Mumbai candidate after the BMC elections was not given an answer/ explanation by EC when his own family and the candidate himself had voted for him and he had zero votes polled???

Even Mayawati wanted to know the reason.....and no one is bothered and today this so called EC on whose behest acting after so long time.

Go to Supreme Court with your petition.....and what will happen ultimately ...you find their own judges to give the verdict???

Is this the same "Mahatma Gandhian Democracy" Or the Dictator(who has no guts to speak in front of the media on national channel for debates ...only he comes on Mann Ki Baat(One sided)... on radio channels to fool the uneducated... "Mr. Feku's Autocratic Democracy"

    Why is he scared.....any answers.....

Why it took soooo loooong for the EC to exhibit and on whose instructions??? Any setting done???

    Any Answers?

A simple answer why are the so called the developed and advanced countries in technology are not using these EVM machines if they are "Tamper Proof"???

If an Apple devices can be hacked and EVM's cannot be hacked??? Big Joke....

Give a chance to the opposition to make their stand clear if the "True Gandhian Democracy" prevails if not the "Autocratic Democracy" which is prevailing at present in the country to keep the oppositions mouth shut for ever which is not at all a good sign for growing Democratic India.

What made you compare evm with apple devices? Why do you feel apple device so superior? Just because they were designed at usa? Common I will tell you the difference:-
Apple device can be hacked since they are connected to internet. Can you hack old iPod? No because there is no interface to outside world other than loading songs and just playing songs. What else you can do with iPod? Can you load and play more games? Can you transfer money from bank?

Evm also same way. They have standalone software. They have no interfere to connect to internet or load program from dvd. Can you?

AAP was forced to demonstrate a look alike EVM to prove it is not tamper proof because EC wouldn't provide them with the one voting was conducted recently at the behest of BJP. Even after that AAP challenged EC to provide those EVMs used during voting but EC wouldn't oblige but set up a date for challenge but never fulfilled its promise and now it is deviating from the issue and conducting thier own demonstration with thier own people and claiming EVMs are perfect and tamper proof and " Tampering Claim is Wrong" , that's it matter closed. What does all this say without giving a chance to the opposition to prove its wrong?. EC and BJP know very well that EVMs can be tampered and now finding a way to escape from public humiliation. AAP can easily prove it and Modi's state will be like Trump!?!?!?.....

    See the statistics in 2014
West Bengal : 34/40 didis party
Tamil Nadu:- around 30 seats to amma
UP 70 plus seats to bjp
How did other parties retain seats in west Bengal and Tamil Nadu? Because they got votes from people. That's it.
