Kundapur: Colourful ‘Horekanike’ procession held at Immaculate Church, Gangolli

Kundapur, May 17: As a prelude to the inauguration and blessings of the newly renovated Immaculate Conception Church, Gangolli a procession of offerings carried on the heads known as ‘Horekanike’ across religions was held on Tuesday May 16.

Abhinandana A Shetty, entrepreneur from Kundapur who spoke after setting in motion the goodwill procession near Malegangolli, Gangolli said that religion is important for everybody. “We should proceed on the basis of religion respected by us. It is also necessary to respect other religions. The construction of the new church of the Mother of Immaculate Conception has increased the sanctity of Gangolli. May the church spread peace and harmony so that people belonging to different religions may live in coexistence,” he said.

A procession of vehicles laden with offerings was held from Melegangolli to Gangolli church. Dollu dance, tiger costumes, Nasik band, beatings of drums and people in various other costumes increased the beauty of the procession.

“Everybody should try to maintain peace by mixing with each other giving up differences of religions, caste and creed. An atmosphere of harmony should be created in the country. The system which benefits the society through religions should be formed,” said MLA J R Lobo. He was speaking as the guest in the programme.



“The Church of Immaculate Conception reflects harmony. It is commendable that help and cooperation from all groups of people is obtained during the construction of the Church. May the church develop as a symbol of peace among all the religions,” he said.

Gangolli priest Vedamurthi G Vedavyasa Krishnananda Acharya, Muslim Khazi Moulana Abdul Salam Madani, Udupi diocese inter religious federation director Fr Louis D’Sa, Mahalaxmi Cooperative Bank branch manager G K Sheena, Gangolli Anjuman English medium school convener Mansoor Nakhuda conveyed their best wishes.

First rank holder in state PUC, Radhika Pai Gangolli was felicitated on the occasion. Sunil Veigas and Purushotham who helped in the church construction were honoured.
Kundapur zonal chief priest Fr Anil D’Souza, church parish priest Fr Albert Crasta, church parish pastoral council vice president Jerald Crasta, Konkani Sahitya Academy former president Roy Castelino were present.

Ovin Rebello and Lavita Pinto compered the programme. Church parish pastoral council secretary Preethi Fernandes proposed the vote of thanks.
