Mangaluru May 15: KMC Hospital and College in association with World Health Organization performed a street play under the theme ‘Slow down slow lives’ at Kadri Park here on Sunday May 14. This street play was the last part of road safety week which was observed from May 8 to 14.

Medical students of KMC consisting of 15 members led by Yug acted in the 15 minutes play to create awareness about road safety. .

Speaking to daijiworld.com associate director of alumni Dr Santhosh Rai said, "The road safety week was from May 8 to 14. During this one week we conducted events such as essay writing, walkathon, slogan writing and street play. Accident is a major causes of death which is also manmade. So we need to create awareness among people about road safety. At the same time it is necessary to take up road safety measures to reduce such incidents."

Head of emergency department Dr Jeedhu Radhakrishna said," We need to focus on accidents, over speeding and rash driving. Two wheelers claim many lives from age group of 19 to 30. They are the backbone of our country and we should not lose them in such accidents".

One of the students, Yug ,said, "Due to the consumption of alcohol they lose thinking capacity and lose control and become victims of accidents. It takes just one sec to lose a life. We notice two-wheelers moving at a speed of more than 100 kilometers per hour at night. They need to be responsible for safety of others too. The change should come from within us and awareness should be created on road safety to stop such accidents".

Dr Diwakar Shetty, Premalatha and others were present.

    What a nice contribution from the KMC students in promoting the road safety awareness in Mangalore thru their street play. Road safety is a growing concern in and around Manglore due to the fact that the population is increasing and so also due to growing affluence the road traffic is also increasing thru growing per capita of vehicles, scooters, rickshaws and even busses. The roads will always narrow and congested with growing traffic with the ancient narrow streets still prevailing.

    What is the next solution? Some of the essential ways to improve the road safety are the following:-

    a) Keep the roads clean by taking away all the scattered debris and make space for more traffic.;
    b) Plan some of the fly-overs now so that some of them can come into share after few years.
    c) Provide some overhead bridges so that able young people can cross across the roads if possible.
    d) Allocate more policemen on the road to control the traffic with or without the traffic lights.
    e) Allocate few days of the week for one way traffic when the traffic is beyond control.
    f) Enforce strict laws for any violators of traffic.
    g) Plan parking places in some of the outskirts of the City so that people can walk for short distance.
    h) Expand the pedestrian walk-aways without any roadside vendors and blocking the pathway.
    I) No parking or temporary halts on the main roads at any time.

    There are so many ways to modify the present mode of traffic movements, including the presence of student traffic volunteers that can watch and guide the traffic in peak hours.

    Each and every development in and around City for the next ten years should be view on the strength of improving traffic conditions and traffic regulations.

    Best of luck
