Mangaluru: Democracy succeeds only when minorities live without fear: Former minister

Mangaluru, May 14: "A democratic system can succeed only when minorities are able to live in an environment that is free from fear," said former higher education minister B A Moideen.

He was speaking at a Muslim youth convention organized by Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) at Shanti Nilaya in Balmatta here on Sunday May 14.

"Secularism is the life force of this nation. Hence youths should stop propoganda in the name of caste and religion and instead should promote and strive for harmony. The coastal region was peaceful and harmonious in the past, so the youth of today have the responsibility of wiping out the disharmony that we see here now," he said.

"We have a history of co-existing as brothers. But these days, attempts are being made to sow the seeds of hatred among us. While we fight for our rights, we need to remember our responsibilities too. Even when fighing for justice in harassment and abuse cases, one should do so without considering caste and religion. Democracy flourishes when there are efforts to eliminate discrimination on the basis of caste and religion," he added.

DYFI national president Mohammed Riyaz Calicut inaugurated the programme.

Educationist Harekala Hajabba, AIIEA national president Amanulla Khan, DYFI state secretary Rajshekhar Murthy and others were present as guests.

DYFI state president Muneer Katipalla delivered the keynote address. DYFI district president Imtiyaz B K compered.

    In other words, some minorities except to be pampered more. Despite being provided all the ameneites, welfare schemes, bhagyas, foreign pilgrimage expenses they are not happy.

    Exactly! Democracy is successful in our country because minorities in India live without any kind of fear. On the contrary freedom is even misused by them in many instances. There is more freedom in India than in the US. That’s why both India and the US still survive as the world’s largest democracies. Obviously one cannot find this kind of freedom and fearlessness among minorities in our neighbouring countries.

    Democracy succeeds only when all this crap of minority/majority is thrown to the dustbin......All have to respect each others beliefs & automatically there will be goodwill towards each other.....

    But its easier said than done......When you butcher what others worship, preach jihad, entice conversions & still want democracy to succeed??........Kya logic hai!!.....

    Democracy is successful when every one is treated as Indian in equal terms.. no special treatement for one community in the name of votes,. It is not that minotory is feeling fear, but it is cheap dirty sicklar parties who instill unnecessary fear in order to gain votes do appeasement... such parties are being sent home for their decades of sin.. but they are not learning..

    India is for all .. development for all.. sab ka sat sab ka vikas.. no no no no to all dirty and cheap politicians who divide Indians as minority majority all the time...

    with growing tensions, the best will be to have inter-religious forums, workshops, singing classes, whatever, to foster a sense of community,

    When we are divided, its only the politicians who win, We all know that at the pit of our stomach.

    This stupidity has caused me to dislike a few people on the basis of their social affiliations. I consider myself a theist and not a religious person.

    I WOULD NOT LIKE TO LIVE IN A MANGALORE THAT ONLY CALLS ITSELF "SMART" BUT IS BEING IDIOTIC ABOUT ITS URBAN PLANNING .. I WOULD NOT WANT MY CHILDREN TO GROW IN A LAND FULL OF HATRED TO OTHER COMMUNITIES AND ONE THAT DOESN'T CELEBRATE DIVERSITY.

    I WOULD LIKE MY OLD MANGALORE TO BE REVIVED WHERE EVERY CHILD PLAYED WITHOUT KNOWING WHAT A RELIGION IS, only fighting for their toys, BEING INNOCENT AND AWAY FROM POLITICS.

    Your words are contradictory to each other.
    You want unity, at the same breath you say there should be inner community groups..which is undoubtedly divisive.
    You say you are a Theist and continue saying that you are a non believer.!
    Probably, you being a global citizen, you have seen Mangalore only through news media. We in Mangalore have friends circles with hindus, Muslims and Christians. Weekends is fun in Spindrift, 7 to 8 people on one table!
    Mangalore has not gone that bad what you think. Come out of your cocooned community based circles and mingle with everyone else, you could see the beautiful Mangalore.

    Bunch of people talking for Muslims rights and responsibilities.
    But structure and policy of the community should be adapted to fit modernization like any other sustained civilization done it.
    The school of thought should be changed in that community to fit and proactively engage with society even if u fall rock bottom you can build and sustain.
