Beltangady, May 5: There were celebrations galore at Dharmasthala pilgrim centre and Beedu, the residence of Dr Veerendra Heggade on Thursday, May 4 as 102 couples tied the marriage knot during the 46th annual mass wedding ceremony.

In total, 102 couples married in between their religious recitations and customs in the evening. Heggade was distributing sarees, clothes for brides and Dhothi, shawl and shirt to grooms since the morning.

During the mass marriage ceremony, Dharmasthala Dharamadhikari D Veerendra Hegde and Hemavathi Hegde, director general of police Kishore Chandra, MLAs K Vasanath Bangera, K Abhayachandra Jain, film artistes Yash and Radhika Pandith, Birla Corporation, Calcutta CEO Sandeep Ranjan Ghosh conveyed their best wishes.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Veerendra Heggade said, “Personality of an individual becomes complete after marriage. Simple marriage is the intention of mass weddings. The weddings are not arranged for poor. As westerners say, 'Wedding is not a prison'. Getting married between elders and priests increases the spiritual and family responsibility. There should be no rift among couples for any reason.”

He offered prayers for good rain, harvest and prosperity for all on the occasion.

Dr Sridhar Bhat welcomed. Srinivasa Rao proposed vote of thanks. Ajith Kokradi compered the programme.

The 12,000nd couple, Brahmavar’s Kiran and Karkala’s Sridevi were dumb. They were honoured in a separate platform. As many as 11 weddings were inter-religious and 15 couples were from backward tribe.

So far, 12,029 couples have got married at Dharmasthala since 1972.

Below is a message from Dr Veerendra Heggade for those who thinks celebration of wedding is more important than the happy married life thereafter. I always oppose grand weddings for prestige and competition by those who can not afford but always support big fat weddings by rich and affordable ones as it gives daily bread to many those who involved in event management business (Caterers, decorators, musicians, singers, artists, jewelers, cloth business, community halls etc. Never take a loan and celebrate your wedding as it will spoil your wedded life.

Dharmasthala is one of the pilgrimage I respect and always wish to visit when time permits due to it's activities. It has diverted it's funds towards education and social works. some of my friends who could not afford to study have got education from Gurukula and many of them are settled in USA and other countries too. It not only feeds hungry on daily basis, it also feeds many throughout life by giving education of high standard. Unites couples who cannot afford to celebrate their wedding with great celebration. It also supports agriculturist through advanced techniques, exhibitions and education on farming. During 80's I have witnessed it's contribution to build a catholic education under Ujire Church. Dharmasthala Dharamadhikari D Veerendra Hegde, his family and trust supports people of any religion. This is the only temple I know which allows it's visitors to enter its kitchen which is highly hygiene. God is one and invisible. If someone does something good in any name of God, it should be appreciated. The different names of God and holy books are to guide us towards better life and eternity. Only the humanity we show and our KARMA will take us to heaven or hell. God only exists where someone does something good in his name. God bless this temple and the people involved in good works under this temple. I am a big fan of this temple and it's activities.
