Shivamogga: SUV crashes into lorry ferrying timber, 7 die on spot

Shivamogga, May 5 (DHNS): Seven persons died on the spot when the sports-utility vehicle (SUV) in which they were travelling rammed into a lorry ferrying timber on National Highway-206 at Muddinakoppa near Shivamogga on Wednesday midnight.

According to the police, the deceased have been identified as Praveen, a native of Magadi taluk in Ramanagaram district and a make-up artiste, Madhu, also from Magadi taluk, Sridhar from Jalahalli, Bengaluru; Mallesh of Mandya; Rajshekhar, from Sorab; Manjunath of Shivamogga taluk - all of them were working as drivers/waiters and bars and restaurants in Bengaluru and Raghavendra, a garments worker from Shikaripur.

They had left Bengaluru for Sagar on the evening of May 3 to attend the wedding of their friend Venkatesh, slated for May 4. They picked up Raghavendra from Shivamogga around 11.30 pm.

Madhu, who was at the wheels, tried to overtake the lorry which was moving slowly and crashed into it from behind. The impact of the hit was so severe that the bodies of all seven persons were stuck in the vehicle.

Police personnel extricated bodies with the help of an earthmover and metal cutting tools after a three-hour-long operation. Vehicular movement was disrupted between Ayanur and Shivamogga for a short period on Thursday morning.

Additional Superintendent of Police Muthuraj visited the spot. The bodies were kept in the mortuary of district general hospital. Kumsi police have registered a case.

    Brother Nithya,
"accidents never happen. Only negligence" This we will realize only when it may happen in our own driving. Remember one thing nobody will drive on the road with an intention to kill anyone, it just happens and some innocent will die.

I see people blaming suv's power , and drivers...

what I have to tell is there is fault of these log carrying trucks which carries logs or any other goods that are longer or larger than its carriage size and more weight than the trucks capacity limit which makes trucks slower in steep roads and tail break lamps will be less visible to other vehicles and it doesn't have any radium caution signs installed behind . so traffic authorities should consider this and make strict regulations for such trucks.

Excellent observations... I too felt the same... Many of the slow moving trucks on the highway won't have tail lamps / radium stickers - their backs will be so much covered by dust that unless you have strong high beams, you will miss them from view,,, same situation with tractors / bullock carts on highways... In the above case the also I doubt whether the truck had reflective materials on the heavy wood logs ... No deterrents to tail lamp less driving of vehicles n culprit departments to be brought to book.

Irreplaceable loss to the families of the youth,,, RIP

Only eligible responsible people should be given driving license and not everyone. Otherwise this is the result. Government has gone to collect fees taxes on someone's death

Most of the occupants in the vehicle were in their 20s.

    The driver Madhu was 26.

    My simple suggestion:

Write your will before getting into a vehicle.

Drivers under 30 years of age are always in a great hurry. Their vehicle somehow always loses control.
