Karkala, Apr 27: The national highway between Karkala Chilimbi and Mulloor here is getting converted as death trap and yet the government officials are indifferent about the increasing accidents. While highway work is in progress, the authorities have failed to make a proper arrangements for the smooth flow of traffic.

In a second accident in the sector, a car crashed onto a light pole here on Wednesday, April 26. The car from Kalasa to Mangaluru was being driven by Karthik, resident of Surathkal.

It is learnt that a bus stopped abruptly at Miyar Kajarabail bus stop on Wednesday afternoon at about 1.15 pm while a heavy vehicle was approaching from opposite direction. At that juncture, the car turned to the right and hit a light pole. As the pole fell to the ground, the electric cables remained hung above the road.

A few days ago, a car had hit a light pole near Miyar bridge at night. As the pole fell, electricity was disrupted.

The work in progress on NH 66 has not been properly managed for the traffic and several accidents have already taken place on the stretch causing loss of life and property.

There are no sign boards beside the electric poles. In a similar incident a few years ago in Bola, a bike had fallen in the drains and the rider was seriously injured.
Karkala rural police had then voluntarily registered a case against the contractor.
