Karnataka-origin Surgeon Gen Vivek Murthy asked to step down by Trump admin

Washington, Apr 22 (PTI): Indian-American Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, appointed by the previous Obama regime, has been asked to step down by the Trump administration to put its own leadership in place.

"Today, Murthy, the leader of the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, was asked to resign from his duties as Surgeon General after assisting in a smooth transition into the new Trump administration," the US Department of Health and Human Services said in a statement yesterday.

"Murthy has been relieved of his duties as Surgeon General and will continue to serve as a member of the Commissioned Corps," the statement continued.

Murthy, 39, the 19th Surgeon General and the first Indian American to hold this position said in a Facebook Post that it was an honour and privilege to work for this prestigious position.

"For the grandson of a poor farmer from India to be asked by the President to look out for the health of an entire nation was a humbling and uniquely American story. I will always be grateful to our country for welcoming my immigrant family nearly 40 years ago and giving me this opportunity to serve," he said.

Murthy has been replaced by Rear Admiral Sylvia Trent- Adams, who is the current Deputy Surgeon General.

"(Health and Human Services) Secretary (Tom) Price thanks him for his dedicated service to the nation. Rear Admiral Sylvia Trent-Adams, who is the current Deputy Surgeon General, will serve as the acting Surgeon General and assume leadership of the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps," the official statement said.

Interestingly, Murthy is the second Indian-American to be removed by the Trump administration from a senior position. The first one was the US Attorney from New York Preet Bharara who was fired after he refused to resign.

"As my colleague, Rear Admiral Sylvia Trent-Adams takes over as Acting Surgeon General, know that our nation isin capableand compassionate hands. Thank you, America, for the privilege of a lifetime. I have been truly humbled and honoured to serve as your Surgeon General. I look forward to working alongside you in new ways in the years to come," he wrote on his Facebook Post.

"While I had hoped to do more to help our nation tackle its biggest health challenges, I will be forever grateful for the opportunity to have served," he said.

"The role of the Surgeon General istraditionallyto share wisdom with others, but it was I who learned so much by listening to your stories in town halls and living rooms. In a remote fishing village in Alaska, a church in Alabama, an American Indian reservation in Oklahoma, a school in Virginia, and in so many other places, I watched the grit and grace with which our fellow Americans live their lives," he said.

Murthy was confirmed by the Senate by 51 to 43 votes in December 2014, despite stiff resistance by the pro-gun lobby led by the National Rifle Association. The Surgeon General is appointed for a four-year term. At 37, he was the youngest ever Surgeon General.

Murthy's parents are originally from Mandya, Karnataka. He was born in Huddersfield, England and the family relocated to Miami, Florida when he was three years old.

He received an MD from the Yale School of Medicine and an MBA in Health Care Management from the Yale School of Management.

He is currently a practising physician at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, as well as the Hospitalist Attending Physician and Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Murthy, at age 37, you were the youngest ever person to hold SG position.. this says a lot about you. The least, President Trump could have done is to let Dr. Murthy complete his tenure. By not doing so, his Administration may have lost a bright medical administrator who could have done a great job. Dr. Murthy is not at all a loser, except this position. We should all be proud of our Indians scaling heights in foreign countries purely based on their intellect and abilities.

Where is instability of mind ? Honoring once own country and its citizen is wrong ?
In every country the top places are reserved for their own citizen. Is it wrong ?
If you take a ratio, Many Hindus are honored in the Christian countries like USA
on the contrary, tell me, how many of the White Sikn Christians are honored in the top position in India.
Did they do with Sonia Ghandi ?

Many may see Trump may as a insane leader but he is clear about his views, thoughts & action.

In state like Kerala, importance are given to Keralites & Malayalam first in all sector. But In so called democratic city like Bangalore, where every one are welcomed, Kannadigas are given least importance and the city is mostly ruled by people from Tamilnadu & Andhra pradesh!!

In countries like Saudi arabia, no other religions are entertained, forget about converting people! Some of the minorities in India don't like current Government as it don't support conversion, since then they stated calling it as a Intolerant Government & intolerant leader..etc! !!

It is no big deal. In fact, this was the most invisible job in the US good only for CV. Before him, Obama had asked another Indian , Dr. Sanjay Gupta, to take the job. He had politely declined and stayed with his high-profile job at CNN.

Chris, you are opening the box. The BJP/RSS/VHP wing of the U.S. supported Donald Trump and he said very highly about India-Hinduism and Modi, but now acting in a different anti-India attitude.

The current BJP regime of India was totally wrapped up in their own world of international diplomacy without having any idea about the international diplomacy. The current Indian administration is targeting the minorities to demoralize and destabilize them, especially targeting the defenseless Christians all over the BJP ruled States. India got early warning that the blocking of funding for the NGO's mainly operated by the Christian Churches and Organization in feeding the hungry and unwanted sector of the society should not be carried out. But based on the statement of Arun Jaitly, since conversions are taking place, they blocked the funding of thousands of Charity Organizations, out of that " The Compassion International" came to the attention of the politicians in Washington D.C.

107 Congressmen wrote a letter of request to the Government of India to withdraw that blockade, but India has not responded. One member of the Foreign Relation Committee Member spoke about the anti-conversion laws in 6 Sates of India and the issue of blocking of the NGOs funding while he was in India, but India didn't pay any attention. The U.S. Ambassador to India warned India many times under the specific direction from Washington, don't stop the funding of the NGOs, but India didn't pay any attention. The Chairperson of the Foreign Relation Committee Senator Bob Corker is a very rich but a very humble compassionate person who went to Haiti for a few weeks to serve the helpless people, he is greatly frustrated by the action of the Indian Government. And so, the secret chess game of India against the minority Christians and their charity service would be questioned by the U.S. through many actions yet to come.

Why do we need America and jobs in America ? Our government has promised to create millions of jobs. We are in a position to call back all Indians from all over the world and employ them in India. This is the real goal of our present government - Make in India, use in India, be in India.

When President Obama made a visit to India as the Chief Guest at the Republican day parade when Modi had his Rs. 10 lakh or 20 lakh custom-jacket, when the visit was over with, he warned through his speech about the shaking fundamental rights of the minorities, especially that of the Christians. Modi didn't pay any attention since he is an autocrat.

But now, President Trump is a different person, he will not give any indirect warning but will bluntly act. I don't know the authenticity, but came to know that that he called PM Modi and talked in stronger language about the deteriorating religious freedom in India. All the politicians of Washington D.C. are familiar with the emerged minority persecution of India.
