Puttur: Man gets down to clean well - suffocates, falls to death

Puttur, Apr 20: A coolie who went down a well to clean it by emptying its sediment, suffocated and then died of injuries. This incident happened at Hosmajalu Baregudde in Kaukrady village in the taluk on Wednesday April 19.

Babu K (45), residing at Pandibettu in Konalu village, lost his life in the tragic incident. Babu had been hired by a person named Kuriakose alias Shibu for cleaning his well.

Babu was lowered into the 40-feet deep well with the help of a rope. Kuriakose was standing next to the well to help in the task of clearing the sediment from the well. Babu had sent out about five pitchers of sediment when he complained of shortage of oxygen and breathing difficulty. Kuriakose immediately tried to lift Babu with the help of rope. Babu, who gripped the rope, fell into the well after his grip over the rope turned loose on account of weakness. When he fell down, his head banged against the concrete ring of the well. He suffered serious injuries and died on the spot.

Fire brigade personnel from here rushed to the village and fished the body out of the well. Babu is survived by wife and two daughters. Uppiangady police, who registered the case, are investigating.
