Bengaluru, Mar 31: Karnataka Milk federation (KMF) has hiked the milk price with effect from April 1, the first day of new financial year. It will become costlier by Rs 2 per litre in South Karnataka while in North Karnataka, it will see a hike of Re 1 per litre. The hike applies to curd also.

KMF has said that due to severe drought situation in the state, it has become difficult for farmers to collect sufficient fodder for cattle and the cost too has gone up. And accordingly the amount hiked, will be given directly to farmers to help them.

13 districts in North Karnataka will see a hike of Re 1 per litre while the other districts will see an increase of Rs 2 per litre. These 13 districts presently sell the milk at Re 1 higher per litre than other districts. Now onwards the entire state will have uniform price.

The decision to hike the price was taken on March 9 in the presence of Animal Husbandry Minister A Manju, said KMF officials.

All the milk producing federations are making profits. 60 lac litres of milk is produced a day in the state. Compared to last year, the production has come down by 1 lac litres per day.

Milk sellers or KMF will not benefit from the hike.
