Mangaluru, Mar 30: A protest was staged by Mangaluru City Auto Drivers and Owners Association against major taxi aggregators like Ola, Jugnoo and Uber in front of the deputy commissioner's office here on Thursday, March 30.

The protestors raised slogans and alleged that their business was badly hit due to the services of taxi aggregators.

Addressing the protesters, honorary president of association Ashwath Shetty said, "The online cab services by taxi aggregators is a big threat to local auto and taxi drivers and owners' daily bread. These multinational companies provide service on low fare. We do not know how they manage the expenses."

He also said, "We came to know through an RTI query, that these taxi aggregators have not acquired the necessary permission from the Regional Transport Office (RTO) to run their business in the city limits. If they are running their business without the necessary permission, it is against the law."

Earlier, the protestors carried out a rally from Balmatta Road and gathered in front of the DC's office. They met deputy commissioner Dr K G Jagadeesha and submitted a memorandum seeking justice.

Association leaders Ali Hussain, Shekar Deralakatte, Lingappa Nantoor, Jerald S Cunha, Alphonse, Aboobakkar and Yadav Poojary were present.

Auto drivers either demand double the fare or refuse to ferry passengers to the place of their needs saying 'Popuji' after 8.30 pm. Taxis of Ola, Jugnoo and Uber are far more polite and reasonable. They do not say 'Popuji' like the autos. Private taxis are charging between eight hundred and one thousand rupees to the airport. They should understand that passengers also have to work hard for the money.

Auto rikshaw fares in Mangalore are very high. They are Rs.25 whereas in a city like Mumbai they are as low as Rs.18. In spite of this they are fleecing the customers. Bring down the rikshaw fares so that they will attract more passengers. The fares charged by taxi aggregators are very reasonable. The taxi, rikshaw unions should stop this unruly agitation.

Now that GST bill is in final stages of being implemented why not all taxis, auto's and other public transport be issued All India Permit. It is ridiculous that rural auto's cannot enter city and online cabs cannot enter airport, railway station etc., Even auto's should be encouraged to go for online so that the nearest auto to the customer can pick and drop the customer. Also all the public transport needs to checked yearly for proper maintenance. Also all public transport drivers need to be given proper training on driving & customer service.

I have witnessed and became a victim of the verbal abuse of our local Taxi and auto drivers. So called our own people have the best worst words for their customers, while they take them for granted. Now aggregate taxi service is in customer favour, customer friendly, amazing service.I request each and everyone to use this new service and never turn back to local taxi service.

It is very elementary. The local taxi drivers & rickshaw drivers are fleecing the general public, while aggregate taxi services are not. Taxi driver mafia is not allowing the aggregate taxis to pick up passengers from the airport, railway station and the port main gate; so that they can charge exorbitant rates from the passengers.
