Gaikwad fly-ban: Speaker pitches for an amicable resolution

New Delhi, Mar 27 (PTI): Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan today pitched for an amicable resolution of the issue involving domestic airlines' blanket ban on Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad.

Though she did not categorically call for the lifting of the fly-ban on Gaikwad, who had assaulted an Air India staffer last week, she said MPs need to attend Parliament and they cannot always travel by train.

"MPs need to attend Parliament and they cannot travel by train always. At times, they need to travel by plane also. I feel that this issue (blanket ban) should be resolved amicably through talks," she said.

Mahajan, however, said that she was not the one to pass a judgement but was trying to help resolve the issue as the agitating MPs have sought help from her as she was the Speaker.

"I am playing the role of 'tai' (elder sister). As of now, everybody is angry. It is time to calm down and resolve the issue. How the ban could be lifted needs to be discussed and resolved amicably," she told reporters after a meeting attended by Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju and Sena MPs.

After Air India put him on the no-fly list, the Federation of Indian Airlines, which has Jet Airways, SpiceJet, IndiGo and GoAir as its members, also imposed a ban on Gaikwad from flying on their network.

The airlines' move came after the MP had last week assaulted 62-year-old duty manager of Air India R Sukumar with slippers over not being able to fly business class despite having boarded an all-economy flight.

After the ban, Gaikwad had to travel by train from Delhi to Maharashtra. Shiv Sena MP Arvind Sawant, after the meeting, said, "All airlines have come together banning him (Gaikwad), but it is our fundamental right (to travel by air)."

Mahajan said the MPs, so far, have not given notice of a privilege motion. Such a notice can be given by any member of either House of a state legislature or Parliament against anyone who is accused of breach of privilege. This privilege provides certain rights and immunities to MPs, MLAs and MLCs.

During television discussion in this matter one of MLA started giving the reason for attack on Air India staff i.e. Air India staff' s behaiver is very bad, and they deserve it. My question is Behavior of MLA/MP's behavior in public or in parliament house is good??? Why can't they give permission to police or security staff to give such treatment to our MLA/MP's????

Sumitra Mahajan (nee Sathe) is a Marathi manus, just like the Shiv Sena MP, Ravindra Gaikwad.

So, when Gaikwad did something illegal, he contacted Sumitra Mahajan, and not the police.

Instead of taking the proper legal route to deal with his misdemeanour, he took the political route, through a fellow Marathi.

And the fellow Marathi wants everything to be forgiven through an "amicable resolution"!

If anything and everything can be forgiven, why does India need - at a cost exceeding several lakh crores - courts, police and the rest of the law and order mechanism?

Shiv Sena has never worked on the principle of "amicable resolution" on anything.

It has always resorted to violence, physical attacks against people, and destruction of public property.

There is no place for commoners anymore in our polity.
It is all hijacked and supported by higher handlers.
Otherwise Ravindra slippers an elderly airline employee and boasts of beating him 25 times... And still govt and public are quiet...
This is equal to Nirbhaya episode where justice is yet undelivered...

He has to stay in any of the hotels when parliament in session or prior to begin always remembering the air india flight. Otherwise tomarrow he may slap the hotel staff where he stay if he get scotfree from air india incident. The speaker is giving complete shameful wrong signal by backdoor compromise to protect this cultural terrorist party member

Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad no stranger to controversies
He has various criminal charges against him which include voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servants from duty, criminal intimidation and rioting among others.
The 57-year-old Lok Sabha member from the Osmanabad constituency in the Marathwada region was in the eye of a row in 2014 for allegedly trying to force-feed a Muslim caterer during the fasting month of Ramzan over the quality of chapatis served at the Maharashtra Sadan in New Delhi.

The affidavit he had filed to the Election Commission for the 2014 parliamentary polls tells you why this neta is shameless about his actions.

Gaikwad has eight criminal cases against him, including one for culpable homicide. He has been booked for multiple charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, criminal intimidation, rioting, unlawful assembly, voluntarily causing hurt, endangering life, wrongful restraint and being armed with deadly weapons. All this in his own submission in affidavits filed.

Is he part of the PM Modi's 'Good governance'? How 'new India' will usher when heart of the Indian democracy is filled with criminals? Why do we have two set of law for common man and elected members?

Protecting criminal for assaulting government servant from speakers of the house makes any sense?

Prejudiced speaker. She is unfit to be speaker of the parliament. Do an M.P., of the Parliament has the right to assault the Manager of the Airlines for no reason.

Is he not a bound by the law or is he out of the law OR IS HE ABOVE THE LAW.

WHY NOT SHIVA SENA M.P., RAVINDRA GAIKWAD WAS ARRESTED SO FAR. ARE THE BJP'S SCARED OF SHIV SENA???!!!

Where is our law enforcement force. Are they wearing bangles.
