Meat sellers in UP go on indefinite strike against slaughterhouse action

Lucknow/New Delhi, Mar 27 (PTI): Meat sellers across Uttar Pradesh go on an indefinite strike from today against the crackdown on illegal and mechanised slaughterhouses.

Fish vendors were also claimed to have resolved to join the stir which has seen non-vegetarian delicacies go off the menu in several parts of the state.

"We have decided to intensify our strike. All shops will remain closed. Fish sellers too have joined us and are extending support to us," Lucknow Bakra Gosht Vypar Mandal office bearer Mubeen Qureshi said.

He said, in the wake of the crackdown, there was no question of the strike being called off anytime soon. "It will go on indefinitely," he said.

Due to the strike, non-vegetarian food outlets, including the famous Tunday and Rahim's have shifted to mutton and chicken dishes after buffalo meat became scarce. "The meat sellers are piqued over the crackdown on slaughter houses which has adversely hit the livelihood of lakhs of people," Qureshi said.

After coming to power, the Yogi Adityanath government has ordered closure of illegal slaughterhouses and strict enforcement of the ban on cow smuggling to fulfil a key electoral promise.

As the mouth-watering kebabs went off the platter, the owner of another famous eatery said the situation might force the hoteliers to get mutton from Delhi. "But there will be no compromise on the quality of the food," he said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

At the same time, he supported the closure of illegal and mechanised slaughter houses in the state, saying it was difficult for a common man to pass through a locality where the slaughter houses were operating almost openly.

He also alleged that the illegal abattoirs even indulged in slaughtering dogs.

Replying to a question, he said, "This is not a religious issue. In fact, it is directly linked to the health of people, who have the right to good quality of meat and fish."

Meanwhile, BJP national spokesman Sambit Patra said in Delhi that the government was only following a court order as illegal abattoirs were contributing to UP's ill health by getting ground water polluted.

He claimed those running meat outlets legally and in accordance with norms were not being victimised. "There has been a court order about illegal abattoirs which was not implemented by the previous government. The state's Chief Secretary has constituted committees in each district headed by the Collector and comprising ten people each. The committee is visiting every slaughterhouse to see if they are being run legally and submitting a report every day," he said.

About loss of livelihood and lack of meat in the market, Patra said," If there is large-scale disruption, the state government will look at it and resolve the issue.

Senior UP Congress leader Akhilesh Pratap Singh said only small meat vendors were being targeted during the drive.

"How is it that the small shops are getting closed and meat exports are going up. The government should have made people aware of the laws and rules before launching the drive," he said.

On Saturday, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had said abattoirs operating legally will not be touched but action will be taken against those run illegally.

"The government will not touch those (abattoirs) which are operating as per the provisions of law and have a valid licence. But those that are violating the orders of the NGT and playing with the health of the public would not be spared...," he had said.

The newly elected UP Government has been claiming that it has only cosed "illegal" slaughter houses.

The Central Government of the same party has been quick to point out that the "licensed slaughter houses are not affected" in the shop-closing frenzy of the newly elected state Government.

But I would like draw people's attention here to a simple matter: Many businesses were licensed before (and for years), but the municipalities did not renew the license citing the National Green Tribunal (NGT) guidelines - in 2015.

So the de-licensing or indefinite-delay-in-license-renewal (and the consequent "illegality") was driven by the Central body NGT in 2015.

In other words, what was perfectly legal was not made illegal by some arbitrary actions of a Central Government body in 2015.

I would think that the BJP Governments in UP and the Centre are getting themselves into knots, but at the same time declaring the businesses run by a minority as illegal.

Amid a crackdown in Uttar Pradesh by the new BJP government to enforce a ban on cow slaughter and illegal abattoirs, the party has clarified that a similar rule would not be imposed in three northeastern states which go to polls next year, reports Hindustan Times.
Beef is widely consumed in Christian majority Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland and the drive against illegal abattoirs in UP has had repercussions in these states.
To put speculations to rest, the party’s Meghalaya unit general secretary David Kharsati issued a statement on Sunday blaming “groups with vested interest” for spreading rumours.
“Ban on cow slaughter like the one in UP won’t take effect in Nagaland if our party comes to power next year. The reality here is very different and our central leaders are aware of that,” Nagaland BJP chief Visasolie Lhoungu told Hindustan Times.
There would be no ban on cow slaughter in Mizoram and other states in the region where there is a majority Christian population
As per 2011 census nearly 88% of Nagaland’s population of around 2 million, are Christians. The figure is 87% for Mizoram and nearly 75% for Meghalaya.
Congress is in power in Meghalaya and Mizoram while BJP is a minor partner in the Naga People’s Front-led Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN) coalition in Nagaland.
“There would be no ban on cow slaughter in Mizoram and other states in the region where there is a majority Christian population,” Mizoram BJP president JV Hluna said.
Fresh from the electoral victory in Manipur, where the saffron party managed to set up its first government with the help of smaller parties, BJP is looking to repeat similar successes in the three states.
Century is old practice of human sacrifice in the name of cow sanctity became popular practice under BJP by cow vigilantes. Pink revolution has taken the Indian exports to world number one. While Slaughterhouses and legal abattoirs shut in UP.

It does prove the cow is not sacred. But votes for BJP.

India probably has the world’s worst malnutrition problem. Rather than solve it, India’s politicians are making it worse by denying the country cheap protein.

When India voted for the “Gujarat model” in 2014, there was much hype about roads, power and industry. What was overlooked was that Gujarat under Narendra Modi had a terrible record in preventing malnutrition. The percentage of underweight children is higher for Gujarat as compared to the all India figure. Interestingly, in a 2012 interview to the Wall Street Journal, Modi explained away these figures by citing Gujarat’s largely vegetarian population.

Around 80 million Indians eat beef, a number which is larger than the population of France, Britain or Italy. Moreover, these beef eaters are some of the poorest, most socially disadvantaged people in the country, consisting mostly of Muslims and Dalits. To make things even worse, alternate sources of protein are simply getting too expensive for many of India’s poorest citizens. The prices of dal, a staple way to take in protein, have simply skyrocketed. As a final straw, many Indian states have also banned eggs from the midday meal, yet again denying Indian children crucial protein because of a religious decree.

In 2008, the Taliban tried to stop girls from going to school in Swat, Pakistan, a move that the now Nobel Laureate Malala Yousafzai resisted and got shot at for doing so. Comparing something to the Taliban is almost another version of Godwin’s Law and risks being dismissed as hyperbole. Nevertheless, it bears pointing out that if there’s one human right even more basic than education, it is food. If restricting education because of some atavistic religious law is wrong, so is restricting cheap sources of protein for the poorest of Indians.
Between banned beef and expensive dal, how are poor Indians supposed to get enough protein?

Dear Aniketh, please dont try to be oversmart, deaf and blind. Everyone knows that all the meat shops though having valid licence, chicken stalls and even fish shops are forcibly closed by BJP Govt in UP. Why poeple with valid license are also not allowed to continue their business. Is this sab ka saath sab ka vikaas or bjp walon ka saath aur minorities ka satyanaas. Dont worry this appeasement policty of bjp will not go for long. Govt has stabbed stomachs of daily workers and poor ownners of the shops. They are forced to come to road without any prior notice. None has gained by stabbing stomachs of poors and taking away food from their mouth. This is shame to our nation.

According to data released by Foreign Agricultural Services/US Department of Agriculture, India along with Brazil remained top global exporter of beef during the year 2016.

Since the Modi govt came to power India became world’s largest beef supplier . In 2015 India was declared world’s top beef exporter and in 2016 it continued to retain its number position in beef export.

In the given year India exported 1850 metric tons of carabeef (buffalo meat). While there is widespread confusion regarding the definition of beef in India, the US Department of Agriculture classifies buffalo meat as beef.

Muslims are unnecessarily blamed maligned and targeted for excessive meat consumption while the fact is that Christians and Jews are the highest meat consumer communities. The world’s largest beef meat exporter country is Brazil followed by India,Australia, USA and UK.

When we see this matter in an Indian perspective we would be surprised to know that out of six largest meat exporters of India four are Hindus. In spite of these facts Muslims are harassed and targeted and as beef eaters. In several cases they are beaten severely by Hindutva brigades and put behind bars by the police. Many times communal riots took place only due to this blame game. These communal elements become more active during Eid ul Azha festival only to communalize the atmosphere.

But the same Hindutva brigades forget the Hindu animal sacrifice festivals which get media attention world over in which thousands of animals are killed ruthlessly.

There’s a ritual of sacrificing cow which is still performed in many temples of Himachal Pradesh, Surprisingly the high court had to intervene to stop those animal killings in the premises of Mandir specially at the Pashupatinath Temple.
