Mangaluru: Be careful when uploading information on social media: Police commissioner

Media Release

Mangaluru, Mar 24: "Too much dependency on social media causes innumerable problems. So, be cautious about what you upload in social media platforms which is laden with a number of risks associated with online communities," said Mangaluru city police commissioner M Chandra Sekar.

He was delivering a guest lecture on social awareness programme organized by Alva’s UG dept of commerce, on Wednesday March 22, at Kuvempu Hall, Vidyagiri in Moodbidri.

"Our public profile should be limited. It is ourselves who invite problems by posting exorbitant information and images in social media," he observed.

"There are many young people who have an attachment to their online lives, be it social media or gaming, that is unhealthy and can cause them significant problem with school performance, social life and even physical health," he added.

Stressing on the need to curb drug menace, he said, "Drug addiction is a problem that has been increasing immensely among youngsters in society. The menace needs to be curbed at its roots."

Sharing his own experience of student life, he said that he was an aerospace engineer who turned out to be a police officer, and that Dr APJ Abdul Kalam was his inspiration. He suggested students to confront their problems, instead of procrastinating it.

"We all have fears; may be fear of failure, fear of rejection, but we have to walk in the direction of fear to get it out of us. Excellency, positivity, and gratefulness are the driving human values which make us successful," he opined.

Answering query about cracking civil service examinations, he said that one should be having analytical mind to tackle the issues. He called upon students to become IAS, IPS and work hard to achieve their dreams.

Presiding over the programme, Alva’s Education Foundation Trustee Vivek Alva said, "Students should strive hard to get excellence in all walks of life. Hard work coupled with analytical thinking will help in reaching one’s goal."

ACP Rajendra, Alva's College principal Dr Kurian, HRD dean Surekha, coordinator Rajashree among others were present.

Great article. Bugbean has developed an Android only app called AntiSocial which help's users control and track their phone usage. A great app to slowly reduce the time spent on social media by using the 3 blocking modes available. Highly recommend downloading AntiSocial and taking the 2 week challenge.

I am confused with his statements. Social awareness is need of the hour. But inaction of the police department most of the times lead to confusion is there any political pressure or safeguarding part of the youth ?
I can see that there is huge turbulence in social media in puttur and sullia.. Los of wrong , bad , un ethical messages are thrown publicly . The news paper which started a campaign against misusers of the social media in Puttur is badly targeted. Even the news paper in puttur and sullia has to shut down for a week to minimize the damage to its lady staff...
I am confused why the department keep silence on those cases?/ Only in mangalore they give statements.. Why cant they take up those hate mongers and bring them back to the main stream of the society.. Hope the police department will act and become a role model for Karnataka after cleaning up all social hate monger evils.

This is what I thought few days back. If you are a global traveler then you need to keep a tight watch on what you post in social media or what comment you write in here. If at all you land I trouble then secret agent services can procure all that you posted through special software. Cyber police dept can access all that you posted irrespective of your email id. Easy to think that I will use different email id to post in daijiworld but then your ip address can leak your secret. If you use vpn then that too will reveal secrets. So people, be careful on what you type . Don't go for extreme argument. Suppress yours feelings and never express on medias thinking that I have freedom of speech. Everything have limits only you need to fid out what is that limit. This is true for professionals who aspire to work abroad.

It is easy for the police commissioner to give lectures at programmes. But he will show his true police colours when he is sitting on his chair at his office. If he is so serious about the problems in the society he should visit the junior colleges and colleges once in every three or six months and give his lecturers which may result in crime prevention.

The police officers should be a model to the students.

I feel the students take seriously any lectuer given by respectable inhabitant of the locality rather than a police officer as police force is known for corruption.
It reminds me an incident when during a discussion between students of the a junior college and then police sub-inspector one of the students of the 9th standards asked the question " why police officer takes bribe". Such was the reputation the police personnel had /they still have.

Police commissioner M Chandra Sekar is a good officer. Generalizing everyone into same category is not correct. Each of us owns our life, what we say, what we speak and what we post.. Let's take control of our activities. What we do and say and post speak for as to who we are.. For example on Face book we control who posts on our page, who tags us and what they post.. When we take ownership of our own life and actions why do we care what a Police office does and says. Let the police do what they are supposed to do.
    .... Jai Hind..
