Rape of teenager by priest in Kannur - Two doctors, nun surrender

Daijiworld Media Network - Kasargod (SP)

Kasargod, Mar 22: In connection with the alleged rape of a teenage girl by a priest at Kottiyoor resulting impregnation of the girl and giving birth to a child, three more persons who have been accused of shielding the accused by concealing certain facts, surrendered to the police at Peravoor police station in Kannur district. The surrender took place on the morning of Wednesday March 22.

Those who surrendered today have been identified as Dr Tessy Jose, gynaecologist, paediatrician named Dr Hyder Ali, and administrator, Sr Ancy Mathew. All of them happen to be associated with a private hospital in Kuthuparamba where the above girl gave birth to a baby during February this year.

Fr Robin Vadakkumcherry

The surrender comes in the wake of a recent order of the court for offences under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, asking those charged in the case to surrender. Vicar of Kottiyoor church, Fr Robin Vadakkumcherry, is the main accused in this case. He was taken into custody on February 28.

Four other persons named as accused in the case had surrendered in the past. Two more, Liz Maria and Sr Anita, who have been named as accused, are still at large.

It is unfortunate that an ordained minister of God should indulge in this sort of crime. In this context one must also perceive that priests are human beings and in this context our present Pope has perceived the need to consider allowing priest to get married. In this particular instance it is pertinent to point out that that the priest has succumbed to the temptation thus bringing a bad name to PRIESTHOOD. I feel sorry for this human being. ONE IMPORTANT POINT.... AN INDIVIDUAL IS INNOCENT UNTIL HE IS PROVED GUILTY. let us therefore be not on the judgement seat just.

    May justice prevail

I have a question for religious people posting comment over here -

What would you do if a religious leader who you regard highly, commits a crime?

Reporting to the authorities could bring a bad name to your religious institution. Being fully aware of this would you still report the crime?

I hope to get honest answers.

Instead for answering..... why just disagree? The truth is that my question just shows how hypocritic all of us are. When faced with such situation most of you would do what the nuns and doctors did in this situation.

Very bad incident. Since one year this priest was acting as if he was very innocent.
I can't believe that a lady gynaecologist supported the priest ,Instead of supporting the minor girl and her parents .
A priest just to satisfy his hunger spoiled the entire future of that girl.
I think that girl could not even write her final exams.
Just praying for girl and her parents.

A time has come to kneel before God in all humility and accept that God is simple, pure and holy. It is established religion that has separated people from God who loves His children.

A time has come when we need to introspect and see how blindly we are following rules and regulations that have been framed by men, a negligible minority, the priests who continue to dominate the vast majority in the Church, the Laity.

Think seriously. It is the laity who gives priests and nuns to the Church and once they go to the other side, they turn against the laity and dominate.

The so called rules and regulations all in the name of faith have been formed only to control the laity.

It is only money and power that reigns supreme today. Hence the scandals.

Is there a genuine concern for the laity and the problems that they face in today's world?

Is it not high time to stop all the unjust ways and return to the Gospels and follow Jesus in the right spirit which is so clear in the Gospels?

Jesus says: "Know the Truth, and the Truth shall set you free".

These are been reported and hence it has come to light. There would be much more cases which haven't been reported or brought to light. This shows how much of darkness exits in our society & Nation.

We've been loosing trust these days. All that we can do is pray for the better world & initiate doing some small good deeds.

People who preach and acting in the society to be'Gods people' so called religious playing a double role in the society is highly disgraceful. The followers blindly trust to the extent that, these people are the image of God. Time has come to realize 'is it the truth?' or blindly, people are cheated in the name of God, disguising and acting to be a highly pious, prayerful and sacrificial people? The same people, so called ' role models' swallowing the younger innocent children to satisfy and quench their bodily needs. Yes 'if caught and proved, then only a culprit right? Why to bring shame; if suppose the hunger is intolerable throwing the mask one wears and happily marrying, so that a legal licence to such acts.I think this is a very bad example. Pope Francis move to execute marriage to clergy need to be fastened as the very truth is ' Just like hunger, other hunger drives of body need to be fulfilled, otherwise, these accidents will still remain. God bless all

How could we trust these kind of gynaecologists. Priest must have given her huge amount to hide the truth. Shame on this doctor ,instead of giving justice to the girl and her parents, she supported this disgusting priest .

Could anyone please tell why we should go to these kind of priests for confession.

I wouldn't blame the Christian community. These things happen, but it should be an eye opener for everyone not to blindly believe in such institutions and entities who call themselves men of god.
Remember, they have access to your family members who tend to fully trust them as it has been indoctrinated in our DNA. Trust but verify folks, don't be caught off guard especially when your family is at stake here.

Mr. Prabhu Sir, you can not call this incident is a institutional crime. Till today no murders taken place of the whistle blowers in Christian community but in other community it do happend (Baliga murder case is a recent example). Need to investigate why parents kept silence for 9 months. who stopped them to report the crime? .
We do agree that even we got bad apples in our community and our community is fearless to report such kind of activities and no one will stop us to do so.
