Udupi, March 22: Deputy Commissioner of the district here, Priyanka Mary Francis asked private bus owners to ensure reserved seats for women and senior citizens in their buses compulsorily.

She was speaking at the Regional Transport Authority meeting held at Atal Bihari Vajpayee auditorium, Rajathadri on Tuesday, March 21.

The DC asked the owners to charge a uniform fare for the ticket, as prescribed by the RTO. Additionally, she suggested the footboard be lowered in the buses.

Suresh Shetty of Pragathi Seva Samithi, Karkal requested for regular meetings by the Regional Transport Authority to dispose off complaints received by people and also gather public opinion on the proposal of hiking the bus fares.

Ramesh, a resident of Ambagilu, requested for government bus service on the Kalsanka-Ambagilu stretch.

President of the private bus owners' association, Suresh Nayak, speaking on occasion said, "Government buses plying the Udupi-Karkal road do not keep to a fixed schedule. This causes loss to private bus owners. Besides, the government buses also go on a special trip to Malpe beach on Sundays,” he said, requesting for government buses to ply only during their scheduled timings.

Residents of Vasuki Nagar and Panchanabettu sought bus stop and government bus facility in their respective vicinity.

“There are 80 buses unfit to be run, within the jurisdiction of this RTO. Their permits will be cancelled if not refurbished,” said RTO Gurumurthi Kulkarni.

District Superintendent of Police, K T Balakrishna was present at the meet.

I fully agree with Deputy Commissioner of the district, Priyanka Mary Francis, suggestions made by her on many vital issues. I hope they are implemented soon as it will help the citizens who are facing all the problems. Seats to women and senior citizens in buses should be taken on a priority basis. Also, the footboard of buses should be lowered as some find it hard to board buses.
