Bengaluru: Girl molested, male friend slapped in road rage case

Bengaluru, Mar 20 (DHNS): A 20-year-old student was molested and her male friend roughed up after a fracas over traffic rules in Chikkajala on Sunday.

The incident took place on Airport Road near A2B restaurant at Vidyanagar Cross. When tempers ran high, the victim said, she had told a man violating traffic rules to speak in Hindi or English, and he in turn told her to learn Kannada.

On Monday, police arrested four men in connection with the incident: Manjunath and Krishna, both lorry drivers, Ravi, salesman in a private company, and Praveen, employee in a photocopy shop. All are residents of Sonnappanahalli.

The girl and her friend Santosh (name changed) were returning on a two-wheeler after dinner at a restaurant when they noticed a scooter approaching them head-on.

Arrested accused

The vehicles stopped face to face. Manjunath, on the scooter, had no headlights and was riding in the wrong direction, according to the complaint.

When the girl questioned him, he said it was a service road on which two-way traffic was allowed. The girl and Santosh then asked Manjunath about the headlight. This triggered a heated argument.

Manjunath snatched the key of their bike. When the girl and Santosh asked Manjunath to speak in English or Hindi, Manjunath abused them in foul language and slapped Santosh, police said. The complaint said the victim rushed to Santosh’s help, but was overpowered by a crowd which had gathered by then.

Some men pushed her and touched her inappropriately, she told the police. She started crying and pleaded to be allowed to go, but they continued to molest her, the complaint said.

Some in the crowd said it was better for the two to go back to where they came from, she told the police. Santosh snatched the key back and the two escaped, but were chased for a distance by a few men. After they reached a safe place, she called up her mother, who informed the police control room.“The mother was unable to give us the location as she did not know where they were. The girl then reached home, went to the Chikkajala police station and lodged a complaint,” said a senior police officer.

Phone picture helped police

Police visited the spot in Chikkajala on the northern outskirts of Bengaluru, and began investigation. “We had a photograph of Manjunath clicked by the victim on her phone,” a police officer said. “It helped us make the arrests.”

Police are collecting CCTV footage from buildings in the vicinity to see if others were involved. The girl and her friend are shaken badly, but not injured, police said.

This is just another classic example of women abusing women rights given to them, It’s clearly evident from the complainant the couple of scooter demanded the auto guys to talk in hindi or english which basically what all hindi chauvinists do all time, Just cos these guys were auto drivers and there was female involved she took full advantage of being a female and added molestation and claims like they touched her inappropriatly etc. nonsense clearly a cooked up story to satisfy the ego and teach the auto drivers a lesson, even police know that these complaints are fake but as per our constitution these are the rights given so police are forced to file a complaint and take action. What a sham that females are abusing and misuse powers to an extent it will have dire consequences in future for all the womens.

    Mr John,

Which school you are educated from...? Who told Hindi is national language..?
There is nothing called national language in India...
You or me don't know what really happened there... Let us not assume things and come to conclusions...
If people are coming and staying for years, there is nothing wrong in expecting them to learn the local language, it is there responsibility...
How do you expect every one here to know Hindi/English...?
Do you know probs faced by localities because of the mis-behaviour, ego and attitude of outsiders..
If we expect outsiders to learn local language, it is regionalism... on the other side you expect us to learn Hindi or English...
What would be your reaction if someone comes to your home as guest and expect you to change your lifestyle for his convenient...

I agree with you Eshu. While going through the article it appears that the problem started with the language issue . The victims demand to speak in Hindi or English must have sparked off the fight.
As someone commented , yes we are Indians and are free to go anywhere in India but different states are formed on the basis of local language and it is necessary for the people to respect local culture and language. No one can compel you to speak in any language other than the local language. This is very much evident in states like Maharashtra and Tamilnadu. So Roman in Rome.

In today`s world.... where the law favors a woman...... any man has to understand that if she complains about you to the authority then you are in trouble. The word molestation is used every now and then. Even accidental touch can be taken as molestation.

So my advice to all men is that just ignore women. Dont go to say anything or do anything. If you do resort any of those and a woman complains, you can be put in jail, your photo published in papers.... your reputation flushed down toilet. So just ignore women.

This incident could have been avoided. If the couple dont know Kannada, why they have to pick up a fight with a stanger in dark hours!!!

I am not justifying the molestation. But we see so many people breaking rules in Bangalore on daily basis specially in traffic and if an individual start questioning people- why wrong side, why no headlight, why no helmate & all, no one will benefit!!! and can expect such incident reoccur..

    Very true.
When you are in Dubai, you don't pick up a fight with locals there, even if they are wrong. One should be a Roman in Rome.

I firmly believe, the couple had washed down their dinner with lots of wine!

Shankar, your kind of (sick) thinking will not be for India's prosperity!! Goondagiri from few locals is common in India! Unless they are taught a tough lesson....life will be difficult for Indians outside Bangalore including people from Mangalore!! Learning Local language cannot stop such jerks from jumping at you! No prize for guessing most of their political affiliation!

    Fernandes,
You want me to be frank?
I will not dare to start an argument In Mumbai, Lucknow, Chennai or Kochi late at night, that too with my girlfriend with me.
If I am drunk heavily, there are possibilities.

I never said I support the actions of those locals. But I just suggested not to welcome trouble yourselves.

India is just made up of borders in world map and karnataka is made up of borders in India.
Both are demarcated for a reason. Let ppl coming to blore first make attempts to learn kannada and second its wrong to ask localites to speak in English/hindi.

Man! Proud of your assessment of the whole situation.

Did you ever realize that it is because of your lopsided attitude towards such incidents that India is swiftly turning into a jungle raj?

Wake up men it is easy to tell someone else not to cry foul until the same issue afflicts you.
