India ranks a low 122 among worlds happiest countries

United Nations, Mar 20 (PTI) : India ranked a lowly 122 on a list of the worlds happiest countries, dropping four slots from last year and coming behind China, Pakistan and Nepal.

Norway ranks as the happiest country in the world, according to The World Happiness Report 2017, which ranks 155 countries by their happiness levels. Norway jumped three spots from last year, displacing Denmark, which had held the top spot for three out of the past four years.

India comes in on the 122nd spot, down from 118 in the 2013-2015 report, which maps happiness on the parameters of GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity and perceptions of corruption.

Nations such as China (79), Pakistan (80), Nepal (99), Bangladesh (110), Iraq (117) and Sri Lanka (120) fared better than India on the ranking.

The report was released here today at an event celebrating International Day of Happiness. It is the fifth report to come out since 2012.

"The World Happiness Report continues to draw global attention around the need to create sound policy for what matters most to people -- their well-being," said Jeffrey Sachs, Director of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network that produced the report.

"As demonstrated by many countries, this report gives evidence that happiness is a result of creating strong social foundations. Its time to build social trust and healthy lives, not guns or walls. Lets hold our leaders to this fact," he said.

Rounding out the rest of the top ten in order were Denmark, Iceland, Switzerland, Finland, Netherlands, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Sweden. The US ranked 14th, dropping down one spot from last year, the report said.

Despite recent declines in oil prices, oil-rich Norway still moved into the top spot, illustrating once more that high happiness depends on much more than income, it said.

This year the report gives special attention to the social foundations of happiness, including happiness at workplace.

"People tend to spend the majority of their lives working, so it is important to understand the role that employment and unemployment play in shaping happiness," said Professor Jan-Emmanuel De Neve of the University of Oxford.

He said research reveals that happiness differs considerably across employment status, job type, and industry sectors.

"People in well paid roles are happier, but money is only one predictive measure of happiness. Work-life balance, job variety and the level of autonomy are other significant drivers," De Neve said.

The report also highlights the personal factors affecting happiness, saying "in rich countries the biggest single cause of misery is mental illness."

The World Happiness Report 2017 looks at trends in the data recording how highly people evaluate their lives on a scale running from 0 to 10. The rankings, which are based on surveys in 155 countries covering the three years 2014-2016, reveal an average score of 5.3 (out of 10).

India is the country where people are divided by caste and religion. Discrimination is one of the main problem which leads to social unrest. India will never ever be the happiest nation due to these reasons

Previously I thought Bakhts are only Blind but now I understood that they are Dumb & Deaf also. If same trend continues, there won't be any surprise Cow GOBERMENT will reach us to 155 spot because after that NO NUMBERS!!!!!!.

We are reading this important yet emotional article about India being ranked 122nd in the world. This does not surprise us, but only makes us feel emotional and guilty as to why and how India is ranked so low in the measure of happiness. Our secular values, especially the faith of Hinduism is a peaceful and contentful religion where "Karma" plays an important role. So many millions of rich peoploe are truly helping poorer people in the daily job requirements and millions of peoploe are being benefited by the kindness and affection of so many millions of elite people.

One of the most concerning and major problem in India, that we have noticed over the past decade is the fact that Indian masses are now on a 'rat race' because everyone wants to be rich overnight just because many of them have a Degree and they feel they are entitled to become rich overnight. Hard work, honest work and consistent work is the best remedy for millions of poor people in order to enjoy a higher grade of life. Good fortunes do not come overnight in an ever-growuing populated country such as India. Competition will always play an important role, and therefore each one has to be submissive to others in order to give their best of leadership skills and hard work in order to earn a slow but steady progress in life.

As much as over the past seven decades millions of Indians went abroad for better prospects and the world at large welcome them, the growing economic constraints nowadays do not enable many Indians to move abroad. Every corner of the world, particularly the Oil producing countries are equally facing the stress and strain, and the job opportunities are non-existent. Indians should remain happy with what they have and continue their hard work and honest work to the best of their abilities.

It is our ardent prayer that India should move forward at any rate because our Education is the best, and our determination is the second best. May God help us all.

@Shibu, Dubai, Find out the cause why India ranks low among happiest countries. Becoz the central government of Modi has interest in fundamental values not in developments. Mere in fake development figures will not make India developed. You are in Dubai. You are interested in Thailand. May be you are earning well as other poor Indians have no ache din so far and all promises of Modi are not fulfilled. Come to India and join with us to nation building works. Presently India is 10 years back economically and 122 lowest rank in the happiest countries. Dictatorship is not the answer.

Indian passport will never ever get respect. We Indians always rush, afraid, long ques everywhere, bribes every where, so much population, still many things to list.

Can Modi govt can bring radical changes to:

Law system: Like rape, exploitation of women, children?
    Govt Office: Can stop bribery?
Digital India: Not a single govt website is loading including Adahar card?

I dont blame Mr. Modi, everyone fooled poor public and made their pockets and enjoying now.

My salary is same but spend more for my groceries and dont see any drastical changes in my neighborhood though

    dear kiran raj,

Can Modi govt can bring radical changes to:

answer is yes, but he cant do all alone, we have to support them.
but we are too busy in stopping him in every step,
    best example Make in India
did we support Make in India?
forget support, instead we are trying hard to stop,
i saw a video of bangalore college, students saying make in India is working, still a politician is arguing no.

    who should make it work????
we, when WE comes politicians not included?
as much as possible they tried to stop.

if we need radical changes from modi we have to support him,
now a days people understood this, UP result is best example.
people need not only changes, radical changes, for that govt should have majority in upper and lower house.

Although happiness is a relative term, the social scientists have evolved some methods to measure the happiness level. Norway is at top, and why not ?

Some years back, when foreigners were fleeing from Kuwait, Pakistani Ambassador was there to help citizens at boarder Indian Ambassador did not come there even after Pakistani counterpart informed him. What I want to bring home here is, there was only one Norway citizen in Kuwait. but, their Ambassador was waiting for him at the boarder to help him.

Happiness is just an illusion dear.. we are happy at passing school exam, meeting freinds, eating good food, buying car etc.. We feel sad when we have fights with dear ones, loose someone, health prob etc... Yes, poor people have plenty of problem to worry about but look at the smile they carry.. and look at the artificial smile that you see in the rich arrrogant people.. hope i am clear

in corruption we reached to 4th place, kudos to grand old party.
    henry bhai,
when Bahrain got independence and whats their status today, and whats Indias status today, why?????
    again why????
even after looting country for many decade, they do drama in public that they dont have money to buy good dress.
Former prime Minister openly accepted that votes were purchased in parliament to retain in power, still we support them?
why we cant unite and kick them out of system?
you and me were witnessed to worlds largest scam, why we cant unite and kick them from system???
how people will be happy when grand party beg to countries enemy to support them?
can people will be happy if they support them? if the kill the people will people will be happy?
biggest worry is secretly what help they asked from them.
Former MP says Pakistanis r good than mangalorean, for what reason u will be happy??? for electing her?
