Bengaluru ranked worst in country in terms of infrastructure

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Mar 15: In bad news for the state government, Bengaluru has emerged as a city with one of the poorest infrastructures in the world, and the worst in country.

According to Mercer's global rankings for this year, the country's IT capital stands at a low 177, mainly due to poor public services and transport.

While Bengaluru was ranked the lowest in the country in terms of infrastructure, Delhi was ranked worst in the country in terms of quality of living, with a global rank of 161.

In a report published in Deccan Herald, Ruchika Pal, principal and India practice leader, Global Mobility, Mercer cited irregular power supply, frequent voltage changes, inadequate public transport, traffic congestion as the key reasons for Bengaluru's poor ranking.

Globally, Baghdad (230) and Port au Prince (231) ranked at the bottom for city infrastructure.

Hyderabad, on the other hand, has been ranked the best city in India in terms of quality of living, with a global rank of 144. On a global scale, Vienna is the best city to live in. It may be noted that Hyderabad was ranked 139th last year, which means it has fallen five spots this time.

Both Hyderabad and Pune ranked higher for quality of living than the countrys traditional business centres Mumbai and New Delhi, which have been ranked at 154 and 161, respectively, by the report.

While New Delhi scored well on account of its airport facility, availability of international schools and low probability of natural disasters, these positives were offset by a variety of negatives including a notorious crime rate, air pollution and water availability, the report said.

"Delhi continues to be challenged with increasing air pollution, owing to growing traffic and industrialisation. Delhis air is the worst among world megacities, even the World Health Organisation confirmed recently. Unfortunately, there has been no improvement in air quality," Ruchika Pal said.

Over time, cities like Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai have emerged as cities of choice due to factors such as relatively lower crime rate, lesser air pollution and improved options for international and reputable English speaking schools.

Pal noted that Indian cities that have been part of the survey have not made much progress on the quality of living scale since last year. The only exception is Chennai, whose score has marginally improved mainly on account of public transport, including buses and a recently expanded two-line metro system, and improved availability of expat housing.

we have to learn from the mistakes and the same should not happen in the new smart cities which are being built. In Mangalore already destruction has been done ,Further destruction can be avoided by learning the mistakes of Bangalore. Only high rise residential building say less than 25 flats within a kilometer & have sufficient space for exit from to the main public road to avoid traffic congestion should have been allowed in city area . For other high rise buildings a separate area shall be ear marked . In that area high rise buildings with other essential facilities, green belt, slip roads for proper exits for final exit to main public roads shall be planned..Presently many high rise buildings more than 25 flats have come in city with exits to public road is only a 10-15 mtrs distance .Luckily few flats have been occupied , and once all the flats get occupied then we can see the fun.Where the flats are fully occupied the traffic jams are already taking place. Due to traffic jams pollution, waste of time, waste of energy etc.taking place. Who is responsible for all this .When people feel the pinch then they change the city/country.

Vinod, For all this mess, we need to blame our politicians, ruling as well as opposition. When the ruling party wants to develop/improve the situation, opposition/Environmentalist will object, pointing out silly reasons, like the Steel Flyover project, in Bangalore.

    Dear Zeitgeist,

Not sure where you are getting these fake numbers from. No money in the world can surpass the worth of natural resources.
So now you are telling us Baghdad is standing at 250 after American Invasion or it would have been even lower in the rank.
Your numbers and the rank where Iraq stands now is totally contrary.
You are weighing the 1000’s of lives which are lost with the money which American’s supposedly spent on looting the middle east? Gross!
America doesn’t simply do things unless it has some benefits from it.
They are terrorists and fund ISIS.

Disgrace to both sate and central leadership for not attending Bangalore traffic woes! Though late they should clear the debris from last lane, exit roads and so on! This way...without making any new roads or flyovers, 20% traffic can be eased! Few ring roads, flyover or underpass can ease further traffic snarls! We lost the steel flyover due to political infighting! It could have brought some kind of quick relief! Look at USA...they have several double decker steel flyovers for several decades....and we are dying due to environmentalists and politicians! State opposition cried foul on steel flyover and now criticizing for dropping the very same project! Common road commuters are victims of political party's mud sledging and greed for power! I guess SM Krishna types would have given more attention towards such problems....unfortunately he is too old....be it any party he belongs!!! Our Metro project is going at snails pace.....No one has courage or vision to take leadership and speed up transportation improvement! Ultimate sufferers are Indian citizens!

Bengaluru's administrators and political class seem to indifferent to promoting the best and eco-friendly solutions for developing its infrastructure, which is a very disgraceful state of affairs. Any number of foreign 'study tours' by our leaders have not been able to help in any positive way.

Hope we learn from our mistakes and take people's interest, feedback and involvement, before trying to resolve various infrastructure issues.

You dont know what you are talking about. America gave iraqi people freedom. The truth is that iraqi people could not handle freedom.

Dont blame america for everything. If america had not removed saddam... then kurdish people would have been exterminated. Of course you would not care about kurdish people or yazeedi people or assyrian people cause you would not know about them in the first place.

Of course i agree that america has made some huge blunders in its war against terriorism but what you have to see is the intent behind it.

Many Iraqi's were not so happy under Saddam's rule. But that doesn give any outsider to poke nose into neighbors house. Who is America? Has it taken the reaponsibility of maintaining peace and harmony in the entire world.
America said Saddam has weapons of mass destruction. What america found adter diggibg the mountain was a rat.
India has more explosives burnt in rvery Diwali than what Iraq had to protect its homrland from American terrorists.
In simple words America looted the entire Iraq and Afghanisthan of its natural resources.

America looted Iraq? They have spent 2 trillion dollars. that amount would go upto 6 trillion dollars in coming decades with interest added. And there is no natural resource anywhere worth 6 trillion dollars.

Roads have been dug in entire Jayanagar area from Last 8 months and still there is no work done... I feel pitty for those people who travel in this stretch..
