Student from Arunachal thrashed, forced to lick shoe by Bengaluru landlord

Bengaluru, Mar 13 : An FIR was lodged against Hemanth Kumar, a lawyer based in Bengaluru, on Monday for allegedly assaulting a tenant in his apartment in the city.

According to HFpost, Higio Guntey, a student of private College in Bengaluru from Arunachal Pradesh, was severely beaten by Kumar, who was reportedly in a state of intoxication. After hitting him for almost an hour, Kumar forced Guntey to lick his shoe, then threw the young man's belongings from the third floor to the street. Guntey has been staying with friends since then.

"After beating me black and blue, he still was not satisfied. He beat me again and forced me to put on his shoes and made me lick and kiss them. I had to oblige because I was bruised and was not in a position to take any more beatings. As if this was not enough, he kicked me out of the house. He even threw my trolley from the third floor. This is very humiliating", Guntey told a news channel.

The incident blew up after another resident of the apartment complained to Kumar against Guntey, alleging excessive use of water by the latter and his flatmates. In a fury, Kumar called up the young man, then stormed into his flat and started thrashing him.

While these events took place on 6 March, Guntey has filed a police complaint against Kumar today. As of now, there are no specific provisions in the Indian Penal Code to prosecute offenders for racially-motivated attacks. Cases may be booked under Sections 295(A) and 153(A) for promoting enmity among communities and insulting religious feelings, but the need for particular laws to prevent racial crime still remains unaddressed.

Two sections, 153C and 509A, have been proposed to the Centre following a shocking attack on Nido Tania, another student from Arunachal Pradesh, in Delhi in 2014. But these provisions are yet to be executed, in spite of Nido Tania's tragic death in the incident.

In Guntey's case, Kumar has already managed to secure anticipatory bail in spite of the charges levelled against him.

"Why can't the domestic violence act be implemented upon him for using such derogative words on me and my parents?" Guntey told news agency on Monday. "We three boys who were staying together were tortured on March 6 and I'm going to file a second FIR copy against the landlord today."

His father, who News X TV channel identified as the Executive Assistant Commissioner of Arunachal Pradesh, is hoping that justice will be done to his son.

"What happened to him was inhuman, I have trust in the police and I hope the culprit won't be spared. He is a very soft spoken person and complaints about him are so not obvious. The landlord also abused us badly and we are going to take legal action on him. I have sent my son to study here, not to get beaten by people," he said.

Bengaluru has a chequered history with communities from the Northeast coming to the city to work or study. In January this year, a horrific video emerged of two men in the city slapping and beating a young man from Mizoram with an iron rod.

In 2012, rumours of a mass attack on Northeasterners spread on text messages and social media, leading to a panic-stricken exodus, with hundreds of people boarding trains bound to Guwahati from Bengaluru.

In my opinion, I think, this type of cases can only be handled and solicited by Moral Police such as 'Rame Sene', 'Bajrang Dal' and Shiv Sene' to give instant justice...

    FRANCIS,

Give instant justice??? Why did you bring up the thuggish groups like rama sene, bajrang dal and shiv sena , vhp or whomever. It is likely they will do what you want them to do but the problem is that they will do all other stuff that you dont want them to do .

Do you think that it was instant justice when such groups attacked of church or when attacked on women? If you are against something be against that all the time. Don't pick sides as and when you feel.

Bangalore has become safe heaven for all kinds of immigrants. The landlord in this case could be Telugu, Tamil or even mallu...

People from North do not know the difference between Kannada and other South Indian languages....

Any crime or bad incident happening in Bengaluru is perceived against Karnataka/benhaluru.

@k b r,mangalore, every person ahs the right to live independ in part of the world. But as a normal citizen, peacefully. But shouldnt indulge in hatred, politically disturb others. Here land lord, that too a civilizeed ,educated person making his tenent to thrash, and to make the student to lick his shoe.In which law school he studied this?and did his mother didnt teach manners?drank?or drug effect?so sorry for student. Here the lawyer must be punished so,that he should fall on students feet and say sorry and leck his shoes!in reverse. There are still people in our soceity who are not yet civilised with all their education and richness. This student must get a good amount of compansation .and official sorry for humiliating.

Why cant the landlord be Kannadiga? Your response shows your arrogance and you think only other state people will do such things. Do you know many people in Bangalore just survive on rental income are Kannada people only?

@Nagendra Bangalore,I never meant land lord should nt be a BAngalorean.whoever it be ,land lord hasnt the right to harass the tenents as this one did.Do you personally like to be treated as a tenent like this ,make his shoes to lick.Afterall the tenent is not from here.I personally had bad experience from landlords as my family was tenents. There was no cause to beat the boy .whatever the tenent did ,should be reported to police, they should clear it ,but not self taking the law in own hands..why is the law there when self justice is done?Humiliation is the worst thing one can make.

Some of these Bangalore thugs do not understand that people from other state or also citizens of India! Most often police take the side of locals! These drunkards are not original Kannadigas. They migrate and settle in Karnataka from neighboring states and pollute our peaceful, beautiful Karnataka. Last year when I visited Bangaluru, I was shocked to hear Kannada spoken by these aliens. Believe me, they have literally butchered our sweet Kannada language and molded in to 'sajjige bajil'. It hurts deeply how these people have taken advantage of peace loving Kannadigase.

Bangaloreans never had a good name. I remember we used call them as ghati gowdas, who hardly take bath, didn't even know fashion, use dirtiest Kannada slang. Bangalore is bit standard shape or name only post 2000 after IT influx. However gene is still same, where I and many of my friends still complaint about landlord's atrocity and over there, however they are suffosticated. I don't know why people think that they are friendly and standard.
