Mangaluru: Breaking stereotypes, woman auto driver bravely fights all odds

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (ANK/AM)

Mangaluru, Mar 8: There goes a saying, "When the going gets tough, the tough get going". Almost a decade ago, Rajeevi, a resident of Yedapadav, reluctantly took to driving an auto rickshaw. Transcending all barriers and breaking stereotypes, she took up the male-dominated profession, and through sheer hard work and lots of guts, has become an inspiration for many.

Rajeevi's husband Ramanna Naik who was a civil contractor, purchased an auto ten years ago. Stuck in a busy schedule, Ramanna decided to give the vehicle on rent. An adamant Rajeevi stopped him from doing so and took to driving the three-wheeler herself. Ramanna taught her to drive the autorickshaw and since then, Rajeevi has been earning a living by ferrying passengers. In fact, she is among the city's very few female auto rickshaw drivers.

"I begin my day at 9 am and ferry passengers till 6 pm. I have ferried the needy even after 6 pm. Earlier, when there was no provision of 108 ambulance, I used to take patients in my rickshaw to hospitals late in the night. Many women passengers approach me for help. My husband is not well at present and I am the lone bread winner in the family. I have managed to bring up my two children Manjunath and Yashoda quite well despite facing many hurdles," says Rajeevi.

The brave woman has successfully completed ten years driving an auto rickshaw. She is an inspiration for all the women. Rajeevi is an ASHA worker and a gram panchayat member too.

For Rajeevi, family comes first and she is doing everything she can for them.

This lady is trying to supplement the family income with her earnings. She is brave enough to face the challenges in her profession. She needs encouragement and support. There are not many women rickshaw drivers today and this young lady had the courage to to take to the profession.

Congrats to you Rajeevi. All the good luck to you and may more ladies join your profession and prove to people that women too can take up challenges.

    @ Roshan,

Please do not entertain negtive attitude. She has picked up the job to support the family with extra earnings and income. Time to appreciate when ladies (wives) join hand to support their spouse in easing the burden of running a family. (expenses never descend). More ladies if possible should be encouraged by such motivation. Good luck

If I remember well, it was women who did the scavanging job prior to the advent of Septic tanks and sewage system...so there is no need for them to prove anything in respect of doing sewage jobs...
    What do you say 'Roshan'...?

Dear Rajeevi, Congratulations to you & it is brave of you to drive an auto rickshaw. Hope many women take this as an inspiration and start supporting family.

Why should sewage work be done by women? please show some respect to women. Women have done sewage job in the past, they still do & will continue. But saying let women do it - come on - not accepted at all. Women can do many jobs which is male dominated, including many top jobs with white colour and dignity.!!

Let us change our mindset people, for a better society.!!

Congrats to Rajeevi. She is indeed a Roll Model for all women. If there could be more Rajeevis, they would make the world a happier place to dwell in. Here is case which should be brought to the notice of higher authorities for a suitable award.

Why should auto-driving should be only A MALE DOMAIN? I wish more women will follow Rajeevi's example and prove to the world that WOMEN CAN BE AS GOOD AS MEN.

I wish I could have an opportunity of meeting Rajeev.
