Udupi, Mar 8: Unable to cope with the pressure of scoring well in exams, a youngster committed suicide by hanging at his residence at Kunjibettu here on Wednesday March 8.

The deceased has been identified as Harish (17), son of Hanumanthappa, a resident of Purushothamnagar, Kunjibettu.

Harish was a second PU commerce student of MGM College here.

It is said that Harish was good in studies and always scored well. He aimed at getting the top rank in second PU board exams and would often talk about it with his teachers and parents, it is said.

However, the pressure to secure the top rank is said to have been to much to cope with for Harish, and hence he took the extreme step, sources said.

On Wednesday morning, when his parents were out and only he and his sister were in the house, Harish tied a saree to the fan and hanged himself.

His parents who were shocked at the development said that they had left no stone unturned to provide him everything. "We do not know why our son did this. He would begin his day by taking our blessing every morning. We do not know what happened," the bereaved parents said.

A case has been registered.

    RAC, Mangalore.

More than the students themselves, i believe that parents also need counselling.
Some of the parents do put a lot of pressure in the expectation of scoring good ranks without realising the mental stress the child is going through to cope up with the expectation.
Parents should focus on building the child's future instead of just focussing on marks.

This is indeed a very sad reality of life. it hurts to see so many youngsters committing suicide at such a young age just because they feel they will not be capable enough to go through the exams.

Educational institutes should focus on this point and even if they can reduce even a single child/youth from committing suicide, it will be more respectable that getting ranks for their respectable college or school.

Opportunities is like windows , when one gets closed the other opens . In fact now a days we have lots of well educated unemployed youth , so dropping out of schools / colleges and starting a entrepreneurship is much better than going to higher education and staying jobless for years . Its very sad this going soul took this decision in haste , may be some elderly guidance could have helped . Now days , youths are voluntarily leaving schools / colleges for early start in career , eg : actor sushanth Singh rajput , left his engineering education to pursue acting .

What a sad and tragic situation. Here not only he is deceased but his whole family he has taken with their hopes and mind, their whole existence. They will never recover from this shock and be happy as before.I can only advice to all students of future, please dont indulge in such act.Because life is too sweet and valueable to end in your young life.Of course ranks will bring you further, but not with stress you will never reach it There are many people who dont have ranks ,but still successful in life .All cannt reach this level.we need other people too to be in this world.when not doctors or professors, but normal people too.there are other professions too.Parents, please dont pressurize your child to bring ranks .but say you love him even when he dont have good marks ,but a good boy/girl.Good manners /conduct is better than high ranks.Heartfelt sympathys to the family. He is gone too early.May his soul rest in peace.

Rank is not so important. But scoring marks is very neccessary to go for higher studies like Doctors, Engineers etc. One has to study hard from the beginning. You neglect your studies till December-January and try to cope up with the entire studies there starts the problem for students. Day to day lessons are to be studied and prepare for the exam to get either Rank/good marks. the future lies on us on the basis of our efforts. Without studying and at last if you pray God for your success how can God will pass you? Anyway he has taken the decision of suicide and he is no more now. Other students be careful and dont lose heart. Face the exam with grit and courage and come out successful, so that your parents will feel happy about your performance and to achiev goal. R.I.P.

I totally agree with you Mr J.F.D’souza. Scoring marks is important to a certain extent. Students shouldn’t postpone to the last minute etc. etc. We are aware of all these thumb rules and come across them time and again. The question here is, how do we react when a student fails to achieve something? How do we empathize with a student who goes in the wrong direction and doesn’t find a way out? How do we console a student who oversees failure coming by and help him find a way? The thumb rules you mentioned is not a solution to this problem!! Everyone writes the same old rules every time this happens. These instances happen every year around this time and again in May when the results are out!!! Blabbering about the rules is not the solution.
Another problem is the expectations from parents! Please understand every child is different, gifted with a different capability beyond answering exams and memorizing things!! If a parent fails to educate their children of a life beyond exams, beyond being in the first 100, 1000 ranks, a life beyond comparing marks (we love doing this, don’t we?), then you are inviting these situations in the near future in your own household!!!!
It really hurts to see these instances happening in this era!!!

Very sorry to hear this news...Who told him by getting rank only, one will be successful in life ? Sachin Tendulkar failed in 10th Std..If he had committed suicide, then India would have lost one Legend Cricketer !! Film star Amitabh Bachhan was disqualified in voice test and did not get a chance to act in film !! Rest is history.. Sri Lankan Cricketer Marvan Attapattu who had habit of hitting centuries in domestic cricket, started scoring 0 every time in Test matches but created history by scoring most number of centuries and double centuries and became Captain of Sri Lankan team one day !!

Marks are just useless. You mug up the book and get high scores, that's not intelligence. Where are those kids who scored loads of marks? The likes of Steve jobs, bill gates are college dropouts yet look at their achievements.

At times there will be short comings in life. But there will be solutions. It may take short or long period of time; we should face it bravely. When we over come difficulties, it will give satisfaction and that will be the true achievement of life. Thank you and God bless each and every one of us.

The expectation of Securing top rank is very dangerous. Parents, teachers and counselors have a bigger role to play.

Nothing will happen if you do not score top marks or get a rank. There are so many people in this world, even in Mangalore who are running successful businesses / hospitals/ educational institutions, who never scored top marks or secured top ranks. If not this exam, next one. Life throws many opportunities at us. One exam isn't everything. This is like a cricket match where you face many balls. Every ball is an opportunity. If you miss one ball, you don't get out because in this game of life, there are no wickets. You get out, only when you decide to leave the game.

I pray to the almighty to give strength to his parents and sister to pass through this devastating phase of life.

Dear Dr Ananth Prabhu G, Mangalore,

I totally agree with your perception.

Just to add two more things.

Microsoft giant Bill Gates was a drop out from the University.
Facebook inventor Mark Zuckerberg was also a drop out from the University.

I opine that a human should not commit suicide but face life at any cost.

May the Lord God strengthen the parents of the deceased and may the student Harish Rest In Peace.
