Udupi: Opened in Nov 2015, fish market at Shirva already in shambles

Udupi, Mar 5: The so-called 'hi-tech' fish market building built in the hub of Shirva town in November 2015, which was inaugurated by Kaup MLA, Vinay Kumar Sorake, has turned into nightmare in just a year of its inaugural. The current situation speaks volumes about the poor quality of the building construction, executed by a private contractor as per the orders of Coastal Development Authority.

When the plan for this market was mooted, it had given rise to lot of expectations among the fish vendors and general public. The pieces of concrete forming the slab meant for accommodating fish vending women often come off whereas the fan has stopped functioning. The customers and fish vendors are suffering because of unbearable stench enveloping the area.

Nirmiti Kendra which built the market, was under pressure to hand over the building as the date for its inaugural was fixed hurriedly under pressure from legislators and others. When it was handed over, many works were still pending.

Within ten months of the inaugural, interlock laid in the yard gave way, after which vehicle parking posed a problem. Within a few months, the drain developed snags. Although the estimate of the building mentions about construction of new toilet, the old connection has been put to use for the effluents to pass into the old pit. The pit gives out nauseating smell, and it cannot be closed as it is the only way for disposal of effluents of the market. Two dogs had fallen into this pit, and the people had rescued them with difficulty.

President of Shirva panchayat, Varija Poojarthi, said that when contacted, Coastal Development Authority said they are attending to the issues, and later stated in a letter that everything has been set right, without even visiting the spot. She says that if the old pit is closed, there is no other avenue for the effluents to flow. She noted that even the power connection provided to the building is temporary and the Nirmiti Kendra had certified to the panchayat that it had provided all the facilities and that as per condition, third party inspection was done in all stages.

Because of the pit that is located at the main entrance to the market, vehicles are unable to park there. As it is open, risk of falling into it is high. Varija Poojrathi said that Nirmiti Kendra is entirely responsible to set right this mess. She has demanded for provision of temporary relief at least on urgent basis till all things are attended to.

No one knows whether this market will get back some semblance of order and gets all facilities as per the original plan.

First of all there is no proper planning and the people sitting over there have no knowledge or not qualified for the post. I have visited many fish markets and the vegetables markets around the world. In India , people never think 30 to 40 years ahead and plan a market because people do not have a vision. Just see Ajman, a small economically poor emirate has beautiful, spacious, well ventilated fish market. Now just google - fish market and you get all the information about best markets with designs and images. For example Tokyo fish market.
Planning department should release the design and should debate on the plan and then modify the plan accordingly before starting the project. What about our Bijai fish market? No point in crying over spilled milk.

Sachidananda you are always looking at sarcastic pleasure of criticizing non BJP political party rather than understanding no political party has provided better fish market! I fully agree with Suraj Kumar Shetty and Jossy! There is hardly any fish market maintained cleanly without any nauseating smell! If Congress is bad, what BJP people are doing in Shirva, why they are not putting pressure for better house keeping and organized fish market?? It is responsibility of all citizens to put pressure on concerned authority to maintain the fish market as clean as possible! Very important to employ one person full time for house keeping of fish market and its toilet. I'm sure there is enough revenue generated by fish and vegetable vendors and people may not mind a small increase in price (2 to 3% as fish is expensive anyway) in return to well maintained fish market with working fan, proper flow of drain and usable toilet! Question is, who is going to take initiative??

Yes, during Congress/NCP regime, but since, fish market is constructed by Panchayat and Municipalities, in Mumbai, they were constructed by BMC, which is under BJP/Shiv Sena from 30 years.

BrihanMumbai Municipal corporation (BMC) with 37000 cr budget, constructs and maintains fish markets. Looking at fish markets, one can make out, how corrupt are the parties that control BMC, that are BJP and SS.

This is the fate of our country. A good development work started with high hopes and great planning and a very large budget. When the officials saw money pouring in large number they became greedy and started cutting corners as much as possible. Finally the work ended without any finishing touches half heartedly assuming people are used to this attitude and they have learned to live this way and these corrupt officials convincing themselves as accomplished their task and fattening off with the ill gotten wealth. Result is we are still at the same spot but with only different attitude, thinking and a never ending hope.

I agree that construction is not up to the standards, but who is responsible to maintain cleanness ? who is making the market dirty ? . we the people doing all that and blaming government for every problems.
First try to be responsible citizen . All problem will solve easily. using toilet and not flushing it , disposing the garbage to the street and blaming authority.

Langool, you can not hold the minister who inaugurated fully responsible for such miserable state of fishy market. I still rate this MLA better than many current politicians, Please note that I do not belong to any political party for last few decades. I do remember you working for Oscar during my school days while my dad too was supporting Congress. Yes, personally I may not like BJP for several reasons, that does not make Congress better. Being a citizen I too want better amenities and utility and no political party is seriously interested.....they need only power and shed crocodile tears in the name of development and striving for poor!
