Mangaluru: Virtual, mobile banking workshop held at St Aloysius College

Mangaluru, Mar 1: A one-day workshop was organised by the IT Department of AIMIT, St Aloysius College on 'Secure e-banking and mobile banking platforms' in association with Union Bank of India on February 28. A formal inaugural was held at the Arthur Shenoi auditorium at 10 am. Allen Pereira, former CMD, Bank of Maharashtra was the chief guest. Rajshri Baglari, DGM, Union Bank of India was the guest of honour. Fr Denzil Lobo SJ, director of AIMIT presided over the function.



The programme began with a prayer song by the college choir. Professor Santhosh Rebello, dean, PG Dept of IT and Bioinformatics welcomed the gathering. Allen Pereira in his address said that he was happy to be back to academic thoughts and be amidst young minds. He also said that ‘digitization’ and ‘cashless society’ are the two buzzwords of the society at the present. This is well supported by features such as ECS, CTS, NEFT and RTGS which are prevailing in the banking sector nowadays. He also directed the students to enrol for additional certification courses through banking institutes to enhance their knowledge and insights.

Rajshri Baglari in her speech defined Digital India. She also spoke on the growth of Union Bank of India digitally over the years. Fr Denzil Lobo SJ, in his presidential address recollected the days when the common man was reluctant to use computers and also mentioned that St Aloysius College was a pioneer in bringing the first computer and a computer science course in the coastal belt of Karnataka.

C G Thomas, programme coordinator proposed the vote of thanks. The inaugural programme concluded with the college anthem. Sweekritha Shetty, student of I MSc (ST) compered the programme.

Session 1: Speaker: Rajshri Baglari

Topic: Digitization
Baglari began the session by giving an insight on why digitization is required in the present times. She also briefed on how this could curb black money and how it could be cost saving for customers. She then mentioned about the Union Bank of India and why go for Union Bank and what are the various schemes and services offered. She introduced various apps such as USSD, DigiPurse (online wallet), U Control, UnionBankSelfie and mPassBook, IRCTC payments. Security in internet banking is the key issue of discussion among all classes. This was very well addressed by M s Baglari during the last 10 minutes of Session 1 where she spoke about encryption and how using the apps are safe over the internet.

Session 2: Speaker: Santhosh Rathod

Topic: Cashless Campus
‘Cashless Campus’ concept was very well introduced by Santhosh Rathod. He explained the two different types of payments available namely, offline payments and online payments. He also briefed on how the prepaid cards are useful in education sector. He also introduced the concept of campus card and how it is useful to pay fees, canteen bill, library fine etc.

Session 3: Speakers: Arun Lal and Bidisha

Topic: Security of net banking
Major issue of security was addressed in this session. Various options like OTP, login password, transaction password were discussed. Provision of Virtual Cards for international shopping and foreign transactions were also briefed. Fingerprint recognition and usage of campus cards to a larger extent were also recommended by Arun Lal. Bidisha told the audience that these are very robust systems and hacking and fraudulent transactions cannot happen in campus cards. She also warned the audience on phishing and made them aware of how phishing actually takes place.

Session 4:

Topic : Downloading of app 
Students were told to download Union Bank Selfie app to open new accounts instantaneously. DigiPurse and mPassBook apps demo were given to show the benefits.

Closing remarks were once again made by Rajshri Baglari. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by dean, professor Santhosh Rebello.
