Mangaluru: 'Seeking benefit of reservation in promotion not right' - Prakash Ambedkar

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Feb 27: "There is a need for reservation at the stage of making appointments. But it is improper to seek reservation benefit at the stage of promotions too. Promotions should purely be dependent on individual capacity," expressed grandson of Dr B R Ambedkar and national president of Bharipa Bahujan Mahasangh, Prakash Ambedkar.

Speaking to media persons here on Sunday February 26, he said that for achieving social equality, weightage for reservation should be given at the stage of providing employment. However, promotions fall under individual category and therefore they should be based on individual achievements, potential etc, he opined.

"In my opinion, the recent Supreme Court verdict is not against the reservation concept itself. Before deciding on reservation for promotions, a committee should be formed to find out how many posts are occupied by people belonging to scheduled castes and tribes. On that basis, reservation can be decided," he said. Ambedkar stressed that this is what the court too wants. He pointed out that in Uttar Pradesh, Mayawati government had taken decision on reservation without formation of any committees, and therefore the decision was struck down by the court.

He felt that there is a need for the dalits and secular forces to come together against Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, some policieis of which are dangerous for the secular fabric of the country. He said that secular forces should volunteer to join hands with dalits.

Dalit leaders, P keshava, Lolaksha, Nirmal Kumar and others were present.
