Udupi, Feb 26: Sri Vishweshateertha Swamiji of Pejawar Math observed a day-long hunger strike protesting against cow slaughter in front of Kaniyur Math, Sri Krishna temple here on Sunday, February 26.

Addressing the protestors, Swamiji said, “Nowadays, there is no space to build cow sheds. Why cannot rich people who opt to adopt dogs, adopt a cow? Everyone including the rich should take a firm decision on protecting cows. Goshalas should be constructed at every temples in villages,”

“Protecting cows is the responsibility of the state government than the central. Why is the state government not taking stern action against cow slaughter?” he questioned.

“This issue relating to cows is not limited to one specific caste or religion. Cow gives milk to all without any discrimination. Everyone should come forward on humanitarian grounds. Dr Ambedkar also agreed with this principle. All along with minorities should join hands to protect cows and demand to enact a strong law against cow slaughter,” he stressed.

“The central government has certain limitations to implement laws on cow slaughter, but the state government has full right to enact laws. There is a need to bring amendments in the Constitution on cow slaughter and animal trafficking. The state government is delaying to take a firm stand,” he said.

“The hunger strike is a symbolic agitation to create awareness among public and to save cows. The protest should be continued in a non-violent path. The general public should exert more pressure on the ruling party and threaten them of not voting them to power,” stated Swamiji.

Sri Kalahastendra Saraswati Swami, Anegundi Math, Katapadi speaking at the protest said, “Every individual should come forward to preserve cows. Politicians have slipped into sleep mode. People have to wake them up”.

Supporting the protest, Sri Vidyavallabha Swamiji of Kaniyur Math said, “People from all religions should be united for this cause. We all need to have strong will power. Temples’ administration board should come forward to build cow sheds at temple premises.”

Junior Pejawar Math Swamiji Sri Vishwaprasanna, Vilas Nayak, VHP president; former MLA Raghupati Bhat, Mattar Ratnakar Hegde Udupi district BJP, president; Vishwa Hindu Parishad regional working president M B Puranik, Raghupati Thantri and others were present.

I disagree about the sentiments of one sided people. What about another side of people’s sentiments depriving delicious beef meat consumption. Do a one sided people dictate others in a secular nation, what should I eat or what I should not eat.

Cow slaughtering and conversions have been the agendas of BJP which is more politics than religious.

Cow politics is used to hurt the sentiments of minorities.

We at home have had cows and she-buffalos and I/we know how to milk the cows and we have had drank fresh milk of cow and she-buffalo. Now we don't have cattle. We/I know how to protect and how to feed the cattle in the young and in the old age.

THOSE PEOPLE REVERE COW AS GOD/S WE HAVE NO OBJECTION LET THEM WORSHIP IT ABUNDANTLY’

DO YOU BELIEVE COW IS GOD???!!! YOU BEING AN ATHEIST.

IN THE OLD TESTAMENT AND IN THE NEW TESTAMENT WE CAN EAT MEAT OF AN ANIMAL UN-FORBIDDEN.

SO WHAT ABOUT MY FAITH'S FOLLOWER/S SENTIMENTS DEPRIVED FROM THE CATTLE MEAT.

INDIA IS A SECULAR COUNTRY. WHY WE SHOULD HAVE A DICTATORSHIP NOW.

    Joseph F. Gonsalves,

I believe that most of the people like you make a wrong argument when discussing the issue of cow slaughter. Talking about the consumption of beef on how tasty it is or how nutritious it is, does not help your cause. Also people holding protest against beef ban by having beef biryani is disgusting to say the least. By doing such things, people like you just make matters worse by hurting the sentiments of the people who for ban on cow slaughter because of their religious beliefs. Many of them would even feel that you are purposely hell bent on hurting their sentiments.

What I would like to do is just educate the people who are against the cow slaughter regarding the inconvenient truths of owning a cow. I would like to argue against the ban on cow slaughter on purely on the basis of its sustainability. Banning of cow slaughter does not help anyone who actually owns the cattle.

I am into dairy farming and I don't like the idea that cattle currently in the farm will one day be sold off to slaughter when it becomes unproductive. This is the inconvenient truth that I have to accept. I would gladly give away such cattle to goshalas, but can they guarantee that the cattle are cared for and fed regularly?

In a multi-cultural democratic nation like India, people tend to have their own food habits, culture etc. It's unfair and unjust for a few set of people to DICTATE terms to other people. Apart from religious minorities, there are most SC's, Tribals, certain OBC's, South Indian's , North East Indian's and other groups who eat Beef.

Majoritarianism or Dictatorship will not be accepted in our country.

What I suggest is that anybody who doesn't want cow slaughter needs to adopt a cow. I just want to see how well that will go. The majority of people who oppose cow slaughter don't own cows themselves. What will they know about the cost of maintaining a cow? Do you people even know how much fodder does a cattle require per day?

Swamy over here asks why can't rich people adopt cow? is he really comparing adopting an animal that is at max 50kg to an animal that is 500kg?

Go-shala is a ridiculous. Are the cattle in go-shala fed properly? Are they checked by a veterinary doctor regularly? If they really care about the cow then they have to ensure that they are well fed.

If cow slaughter is ban is strongly implemented most of the dairy farms will close because a farmer won't be able to sell unproductive cows. Milk prices are going to shoot up because of less supply.

People who demand cow slaughter are disconnected from the reality. And the same thing will be told to you by anyone who is into dairy farming.

    Respected Pejawar Swamiji,
A simple question for you, are you fasting against cow slaughter for eating OR Cow slaughter for exporting tons & tons of beef to foreign countries by your own Hindu Guju bais and bens? This is the most crucial question for your cow protecting BJP govt. at the Centre. "Holy cow! India is the world's largest beef exporter" This is what comes in Google, Swamiji.

COW MEAT IS GOOD FOR HUMANS HEALTH AND SLAUGHTERING COWS / CATTLE FOR FOOD TO HUMANS IS NOT A SIN.

I urge district administration of South Kanara district/ D.K. District's each Taluks and Udupi District's each Taluks should issue permits for cow / cattle slaughter houses.

This is need of the hour. Meat prices have shot up due to shortage of cattle in the state and due to it every meat prices have shot up.

Governments of every Indian states should increase cattle population so that there is no shortage of meat to meat consumers.

AND YOU WILL FIND THE MEAT PRICES WILL COME DOWN IMMEDIATELY. INFLATION WILL SLASH IMMENSELY.

WE HAVE FREEDOM TO CHOSE WHAT WE WANTED TO EAT AND NOBODY SHOULD SAY WHAT I SHOULD HAVE IN MY PLATE.

Do not waste your precious time and energy on matters that affect the livelihood of the poor. As a result today you are in hunger strike not with all Hindus but only BJP Hindus so, it's not a BJP favoured strike Swamiji???? Common man can understand the DIRTY strategy of Bharatiya Juumla Party. Swamiji, if beef export stopped no one will kill the cow for meat because oxen only more than enough for local consumption. An enthusiast from the Society of Cow Protection once came for an interview with Swami Vivekananda and asked for his contribution. On learning that the society had a considerable amount of funds, Swamiji said to the preacher, "A terrible famine has broken out in central India. Nine lakh people, your own brothers and sisters, have fallen into the jaws of death, yet you have not thought it your duty, even though you have the means, to help them in that terrible calamity with food"? The preacher replied, "No, we protect the mother-cows of our country from the hands of the butchers, because the Shâstras say that the cow is our mother." Swamiji smilingly replied, "Yes, the cow is indeed your mother. Who else could give birth to such accomplished children?"

Human killing for the sanctity of cow should be equally condemned.Political motivated fasting is inappropriate for the swamiji who should be guidance for the youth of the society.

India is home to 300 million cattle and is the world's largest exporter of beef -- it exported $4.8 billion worth of beef only last year -- and its fifth-biggest consumer. Not only is the beef industry big in India, so far we have also been able to exercise individual freedom to eat or not eat beef ever since Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power in 2014.
The earliest Vedas do not prohibit the slaughter of cattle. In fact, they ordain it as a part of sacrificial rites. Cattle were not only the major sacrificial victims in the Vedic times, but cow milk products like ghee were also regularly used for ablation a practice that continues to this day. Moreover, the Brahmans that performed the cow sacrifices also readily ate the consecrated beef. It is true that the Rigveda (1500-1200 BCE) alludes to the mystical relationship between the cow and the universe, while the Atharvaveda (1200-1000 BCE) calls the cow the "all producing and all containing universe" but they are silent concerning matters of cow slaughter.
"The Brhadaranyaka Upanishad (700 BCE) advocates that parents should eat rice cooked with beef or veal if they want a learned son who is a knower of the Vedas."The Bhagavata Purana prohibits alcohol more than it does meat.
Swamiji we want your indefinite fast against the cow slaughters by beef exporters which took the 'pink revolution' to become #No.1 under PM Modi's regime undermining the values of Hindu feelings.
Human sacrifice for the sanctity of cow should also be equally condemned.

Have you seen him promoting the cause of Dalits, encouraging inter-caste marriages, condemning child labour and fighting for the cause of the displaced, deprived and discarded? Humans have been eating beef since prehistoric times. Beef is a complete source of protein (meaning that it provides all 20 of the amino acids), and provides many of the essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals that humans need.
