Karkala, Feb 26: In a sudden development, councillor of the municipality here, Sridhar Devadiga, has resigned from his membership of the council and also the primary membership of BJP. His resignation has come as a shock to the BJP which has been ruling the municipal council with slender majority.

The council here has 12 Congress members and 11 from BJP. With the addition of votes of the local MLA and MP, who represent BJP, BJP had risen to power for the second term. The BJP was often found grappling with numbers, as the MLA and MP absented from general sessions on a number of occasions. The BJP was found in need of Congress support for taking decisions and passing resolutions on such occasions.

Sridhar Devadiga had remained absent from three successive general sessions of the council. If his resignation is accepted, the municipal chief officer will have to find out whether the ruling outfit has majority support in the council. On the other hand, he has the option to seek guidance from the assistant commissioner at Kundapur, it is gathered.

It is learnt that Devadiga, in his resignation letter, accused the council of neglecting the ward he has been representing. He said that he has become a victim of the policiy of partiality followed by the ruling BJP president, who has not given importance to development activities. "Therefore, I have resigned from the council," he said in his letter.
