Ballari: Panic strikes as 60-ft chariot falls on devotees during Kottur car festival

Ballari, Feb 22: Panic struck Kottureshwara car festival near Kottur here on Tuesday February 21 after a massive 60-ft chariot collapsed on devotees.

 

Initial reports stated that many had been trapped under the chariot. There were no reports of casualties.

Sources said that at least six persons sustained serious injuries. Another source put the number of injured at 30. They have been admitted to local hospitals, is it said.

It is learnt that the chariot fell after one of its wheels came off.

The incident occurred when the Guru Basaveshwara Swamy chariot was being pulled by thousands of devotees who had gathered for the festival.

The devotees as well as police helped in rescuing those who were trapped under the chariot.

    Yes. It is Dangerous celebrations.... Cynthia and all opined here are 100% correct.

    Recently Heggade initiated a cleanliness drive for all worshiping places. Major need of the hour is to STOP stampede in Temples and Festivals. They should implement Security check for all celebrations.

    It is better not to talk - why GOD the people gather there to worship him/her is blind !!!! Or people blindly invite tragedies !!!! Are we moving towards Rocket age or Stone age ?

    Hindus should adopt discipline like queue culture in marriages and festivals to avoid stampede and problems...

    In a crowd celebration or in a festive mood, people tend to forget safety. Religious authorities or committees should keep safety in mind before conducting any such events as huge public gathering will be taking part.
    Some of the examples which might involve major risks to human lives as well as properties are:
    1. Fire crackers accident.
    2. Stampede
    3. Terror elements using the situation.
    4. Chariots
    5. Food poisoning
    6. Temporary structure like shelter falling on crowd
    7. Use of animals and they going wild
    and so on

    Organisers of events should plan it very well keeping in mind the safety.

    A thousand years ago, building these tall, movable chariots, must have been like today's rocket science.

    They would have needed great architectural designs and many skillful hands.

    Although the design is great and attracts many people, an average chariot is likely to have an unstable centre of gravity that is potentially troublesome.

    A small variation in the evenness of the ground can quickly tilt the tall structure while it is moving.

    I am surprised that, in today's day and age, with all the engineering talents we have, people have not come up with certain mechanisms to stabilise a moving chariot.

    Hopefully this incident will be a wake-up call to the many temples in Karnataka.
