Mangaluru: Consumer alert - Beware of callers posing as LIC employees

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Feb 21: Of late, cyber crimes are on the increase, and the cheaters come in various forms, introducing themselves as bank representatives, employees of credit card firms, or lottery operators. They might try to burn a hole in your pocket by contacting the gullible in the form of phone calls, SMS, WhatsApp messages, social media and other routes.

A resident of Kavoor here received a call recently from a cellphone No. 9717616353. The caller said that he was from the call centre of Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India and had called to inform that the insurance policy he had taken earlier had lapsed. "You have failed in your attempt to contact the agent in an effort to get back your money. We will call you again before evening. Please keep details of your bank account, PAN card number, ATM card number etc ready so that we can send money to you. If you fail to do so, the money will be forfeited by LIC," the caller said.

The person who received the call grew suspicious and visited the LIC office and its information centre. The staff there confirmed that his policy was in force and he was advised not to respond to such calls. Thereafter, the person got several calls from the same number, but he did not receive the call, it is gathered.

There have often been cases in which people have lost money after parting with their credit/credit card details over phone. This is another of various modes of fraud through which fraudsters try to swindle money.

First of all these fraud callers have full information about you and your family. When my dad passed away in nov 2014 repeadly i used to get calls from a supposed to be fraudent caller telling that i dint get my full benifit from LIC. i complained about this with the mobile no of the fraud caller to LIC but they took it lightly saying such calls are very common and advertisments are already there . when i got really frustrated and told the caller you take the balance money...... aur tumharee maa kay naam jama kar do !!

The customer made a grave mistake by not informing the police to track the phone call and arrest the fraudster by not receiving his call again. This mistake of customer boost the confidence of fraudster to target other customers., who are unaware of the fraud may provide all the details as requested by caller. So request all the call receiver to verify the authenticity, if not genuine, inform the police to track the telephone call and arrest the culprit. This way we can stop the scams in the society.

First the staff of LIC should improve and be customer friendly then the other private insurance companies will vanish and not try to compete with the Government owned company. It is the employees of LIC should be good to the customers and not only the agents be target oriented even the staff at the LIC office should be target oriented. I'm saying this because I had a very bad experience at the LIC office in Mangalore. Being Govt. run the staff should not take for granted the customers visiting the office. The staff should know that the Customer is King and without the customers they would'nt have got jobs.

Hi Dylan, When a sector is privatized there will be healthy competition & ultimately the consumer will benefit. See what has happened in telecom, aviation, TV, Banks etc...even in insurance there are much cheaper term plans with private companies than government run. It also generates employment & increase in GDP etc....
