Kasargod, Feb 18: A young engineer died and two others were injured in collision between a car and a lorry at Nayammar Moole here on Saturday February 18.
The deceased has been identified as Ahmed Afzal (23), a resident of Chennikere, Nullippady.
Afzal was a member of SFI district working committee.
Vinod (24), a resident of Periyatadka and Nasruddin (26) from Melangara, Puttige, who were also in the car, sustained serious injuries.
They were organizing committee members of 'Kalotsava', and inter-collegiate fest of Kannur University being held at LBS College, Povval, which includes alumni associations of various colleges. On Saturday, they had gone to the railway station to drop SFI state joint secretary Khadijath Suhail who had attened the fest.
While returning to the college from the railway station, a goods lorry plying towards Mangaluru crashed into their car. The impact was such that all the three were trapped inside the vehicle.
The locals rushed to their rescue and shifted them to hospital. However, Afzal was pronounced brought dead.
Afzal was the brother of Mohammed Hashim, journalist with 'Deshabhimani' Malayalam daily in Kasargod and former secretary of Press Club here.
Following the accident, the Kalotsava fest was suspended for the day and would be resumed on Sunday February 19.
Afzal completed his engineering from LBS College, Povval last year.
The body was taken to Kasargod general hospital and handed over to the family after post-mortem.
The body was kept the MG Kamath library in CPM office, Chennikere for the public to pay last respects.
Vidyanagar police have registered a case.
