Koppa, Feb 18: Through a judgement pronounced on Friday February 17, the second additional district court at Chikkamagaluru has sentenced five persons to jail terms of two years each.

The case relates to murder attempt on police personnel who had tried to stop six persons who were fleeing with cattle they had stolen at Koppa in the district two years back.

The sentences were pronounced for five persons out of six, as the other accused has succeeded in remaining elusive so far.

A gang had stolen three cattle from Allamakki village in Koppa in Chikkamagaluru district on September 10, 2014. They had inhumanly loaded the cattle in a pick-up van. Police personnel had tried to intercept their vehicle at Kalasa, Kottigehara. The thieves had tried to kill the police personnel by driving the vehicle on them.

Thereafter, cases were filed against Abdul Razak, Shariff alias Mohammed Shariff, Abdul Rasheed, Altaf, Mohammed Arish and Hussain, all from the town. The gang, in a hurry to escape from the police, had dropped the cattle out of the vehicle near Kalikatte in Baloor. When the cattle were dumped in a hurry, two of the cows had died on the spot, and the other had suffered serious injuries.

Hussain had gone underground after the incident, and he remains untraceable. The others, who were arrested and booked, have been handed down jail sentences of two years each relating to murder attempt, fine of Rs 5,000 each with the clause that non-payment will entail three more months of jail term for the same offence, Rs 5,000 additional fine to each of the guilty for obstructing police personnel from discharging their duties, and three more months inside jail in case of nonpayment.
