Hindu population reducing in India, minorities flourishing: Rijiju

New Delhi, Feb 13 (PTI): Union Minister Kiren Rijiju today said Hindu population was reducing in India as they "never convert people", while minorities are flourishing unlike some other countries, in remarks that can stoke a controversy.

"Hindu population is reducing in India because Hindus never convert people. Minorities in India are flourishing unlike some countries around (sic)," he tweeted.

The Minister of State for Home's comment came after the Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee accused the Narendra Modi -led BJP government of trying to convert Arunachal Pradesh into a Hindu state. "Why is Congress making such irresponsible statements? People of Arunachal Pradesh are unitedly living peacefully with each other (sic).

"Congress should not make such provocative statements. India is a secular country. All religious groups enjoy freedom & living peacefully (sic)," he said in a series of tweets, responding to the APCC's charge. Rijiju hails from Arunachal Pradesh and is a practising Buddhist.

Reacting to his statement, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi said he should remember that he is a "minister of India for all Indians not for Hindus only".

"Remember your oath as minister," the Hyderabad MP said. "Wht have the minorities India got to do with minorities of 'other' countries. It is Constitution which guarantees rights (sic)," he tweeted.

According to the 2011 Census, Hindus make up India's 79.80 per cent of population, Muslims 14.23 per cent, Christians 2.30 per cent, Sikhs 1.72 per cent, Buddhists 0.70 per cent and Jains 0.37 per cent.

The country's Hindu population as per the 2001 Census was 80.5 per cent, while that of Muslims was 13.4 per cent, Christians 2.3 per cent, Sikhs 1.9 per cent, Buddhists 0.80 per cent and Jains 0.4 per cent.

Minister of State for Home affair for 'counting newborn babies' to issue religious certificate.

This BJP MP and MLA is an envy to mathematicians around the world. His attention to detail is impeccable.

In Rajasthan BJP MLA counted 2000 bottles of liquor and 3000, 50,000 pieces of bones, 500 used abortion injections and 10,000 cigarette ‘pieces’ were found on the campus adding that the JNU girls and boys danced naked at cultural programmes.

Now state for minister is accurate information on population census. Is he state minister or 'Kanishmari minister'?

    Prabhu Maam,

You stated that "most Mangalorean Catholics (former Goan Catholics) have forgotten their history", please let us know your basis or background on such statement, did you conduct a survey or interview at least 1000 people to conclude on such a statement.

You may have come across many Mangalorean Catholics in your life time and discussed several issues. To conclude and pass such an opinion is not healthy without providing supporting evidence or results. We will never forget our past and do look forward in the future to be peaceful and have harmony in our societies.

Mangalorean Catholics have suffered in last several centuries; there are several documents available (including a book written by Michael Lobo). Even at present time, Mangalorean Catholics have suffered and tortured by our own people. The 2007-2008 incidents in our Mangalore are examples of such issues. People like you may have contributed (possibly many a times unknowingly) to such incidents by the statements as you have opined here below in this news comments.

In general, Mangalorean Catholics are people of strong will and capable of standing up with peaceful attitude to issues then in the past, at present and in the future.

Hope you understand and help with your positive attitudes and any help to be at peace with all humanity.

Peace be with you and your neighbors.

    Prabhu Maam,

I condemn, you deplore, then to save the day - we use freedom of speech law to express twisted facts.

Please read and then re-read your original comment, you begin stating "Hindu population is an abundant harvest for minority religions" Then discussed possibly no conversion by Muslims and started blaming the Christian missionaries whose mantra has always been "salvation for the infidels". It may not be true to the extent that you explained and shows you have developed certain concepts or misleading facts about Christian missionaries over the years.

What upset me was amount of sacrifices a given Christian missionary has done in the areas of Education and Health Care of people since year 1680 and people blame them for few instances where they might have been conversion issues.

For your information, I have personally seen conversion and extremisms in all religions in the world, not just limited to Christians. You have a long way to go to erase some of the issues and leave them behind so that we appreciate the good work one does to other people and leave behind the atrocities and extremism.

In your second comment / response, you introduce, something about Holy Inquisition. I have read the Mr. Alan Machoda's book and it talks about few generations of people moving from Martha Konkan / Goa regions to southern parts of India for reasons which are beyond religion.

We respect and proud of your have lived long enough in Mangalore and Mumbai before emigrating to Canada 52 years ago, which summarizes that you may be in 80's. You may have come across many of Institutions and way people being educated and cared by those Christian missionaries who sacrificed their life for others. Today, many of us are able to travel and live anywhere in the world due to the gift of education and health care provided by those Christian missionaries .

Please treat you fellow human being with a positive attitude and minimize use of hate towards others. Peace.

There are number of major religions worldwide. But, only 3 religions have crossed the number BILLION.
    1. Christianity - since 2000 years - 2.2 billion
    2. Islam - since 1400 years - 1.6 billion
    3. Hinduism - since 4000 years - 1.1 billion

As per the age of the religion, Hinduism should have been at least 4 billion.

well sir, for your information, there was no such religion such as hinduism.
All people living in india were called Hindus. It is a geographical identity.
Anyone living in the land which lies in between himalayas and the Indu sagara( Indian ocean) was called a Hindu. Just like a elephant in africa is called African elephant.
Its only after repeated invasions that the indians knew something called a religion.
Also so that you upgrade your knowledge, indian civilzation is more than then thousand years. There are enough proof for that.

They convert Black money in to US Dollars and set up business in foreign countries and take away jobs from people of USA & Europe. Our Nationalist Modi Government should have laws to prevent the migration of Rich and educated Hindus to foreign countries to increase Hindu population in India

There are people more focussed with religion than country. It is really insane of those who demand increased population based on their own religion or sect. End of the day they are pushing their own to starvation.

Govt., should start taxing people for every new addition into family of more than three. Only then these religiouly focussed people of every community or religion will start thinking, from where the money will come to pay.

The Hindu population is an abundant harvest for minority religions. Be that as it may, it appears either the Hindus are not as good at increasing their number as is clear from the drop between 2001 and 2011 or others, mainly Muslims who have increased by more than a percentage point which adds up a lot - but don't blame conversion for that. Muslims do not normally convert Hindus unlike the Christian missionaries whose mantra has always been "salvation for the infidels". But the Census do not show much success here.

    Robert,
Obviously you are ill-informed or lack enough education to challenge me, on how the Portuguese missionaries converted Goan Hindus who later fled Goa and settled in Mangalore; they used all kinds of inhuman acts if the new converts did not follow the biblical teachings; including the dreaded "Holy Inquisition". You are, if your ancestors were Goan Christians, a true follower despite all those atrocities, and most Mangalorean Catholics (former Goan Catholics) have forgotten their history. Read some books, like Alan Machado's Saraswati Children and Priolkar's Goa Inquisition. You may condemn what I have written, but that is deplorable on your part to do so; there is freedom of speech.
