Udupi, Feb 13: As the morning progressed, a large number of protestors gathered near Padibidri gram panchayat office preparing to march towards Hejamady decrying the collection of toll charges on NH-66 and arrest of leaders at Hejamady during an earlier protest.

Though the district-wide bandh began on a lukewarm note on Monday February 13, it gathered momentum later on with buses being stopped in various parts. Some of the shops that had opened for business downed their shutters.

Over 750 protestors gathered at Padubidri panchayat, in violation of Sec 144. The police who were in as many numbers tried to stall the protest, and a heated argument erupted between the two sides.

The police arrested about 15 people inlcuding Gulam Mohammed, Keshav Salian and Ansar Ahmed, sparking further protests. They were bundled into a KSRTC bus, but the protestors, who included taluk, gram and zilla panchayat members, gheraoed the bus and refused to allow it to move. They even laid down on the road so as to obstruct the way, but the police stood their ground.

Thereafter, ASP Vishnuwardhan arrived at the spot and bowing to pressure, agreed to release the protestors.

Meanwhile, it is alleged that SI Sunitha resorted to mild lathi charge on some women, not part of the protest, who were standing about 500 metres from the spot of the protest. As news spread, the agitators grew furious and demanded her suspension. SI Sunitha then clarified that she had not hit the women, but had only chased them away for violating the Sec 144.

Finally, tahsildar Maheshchandra and other officials arrived at the spot and pacified the protestors. He assured that till February 25, toll charges will not be collected for KA 20 vehicles moving through Hejamady tollgate, and for KA 19 vehicles within a radius of 5 km, provided identity cards are produced at the tollgate. On February 25, a meeting would be held with the officials concerned and further course of action would be decided, he said.

After the tahsildar's assurance, the protestors began to disperse, and by afternoon, the situation seemed to return to normalcy slowly.

However, shops in the vicinity of Padubidri closed fearing violence. Vehicles too stopped plying through this area. Buses too stayed off the highway.

Udupi/Kundapur, Feb 13: The call for bandh on Monday February 13 against the collection of toll charges and the subsequent arrest of protestors at Hejamady received mixed response with most of the buses and auto rickshaws conducting business as usual in Udupi.

However, in Sasthan, shops remained closed and in Kundapur, some of the schools declared holiday. Private buses in Kundapur stayed off the roads, but some shops chose to do business as usual. Bus passengers were stranded.

Buses plying on Udupi-Kundapur and Mangaluru-Kundapur routes supported the bandh. Sources said that after 10 am, buses to Barkur will be stopped.

Most of the shops and business establishments also opened shutters in Udupi. Only a few were closed. Brahmavar and Padubidri were most affected, sources said. In Brahmavar, city buses too came to a halt later on.

Sources said that goods vehicle are being stopped at Koteshwar.

As public transport, especially most of the city buses and KSRTC buses functioned as usual in Udupi, the bandh did not affect normal life of the people. Schools and colleges also remain open. However, students who came to bus stops were seemingly confused and some went back home.

Tight security has been put in place to prevent untoward incidents. Section 144 has been imposed in Udupi taluk, and along the national highway from Tekkatte to Shiroor.

A protest is expected to be held later in the morning. As the morning progressed, reports poured in that buses were blocked and locals are gathering to protest.

If Toll is to paid for good roads where does the life time tax paid during vehicle registration goes? There are Mafia in every system .In Surathkal they promise monthly pass for local vehicles but the Mafia does not issue. It is stupid to pay tax within a distance of 12 Kms twice Viz Surathkal and Hejamadi.Everyone knows Surathkal toll is high and goes to local elected leaders as Hafta.

Looking at the amount spent on multistoreyed toll plaza it seems that they intend to stay there for years snd years to come and share the booty with their politicsl masters. Firstly, influential media houses should file RTI applications and bring white paper ob the exact cost of constructing road under each toll plaza, amount of daily collection at each toll plaza and number of days or year of toll collection required to fullfill the construction cost. People should join the agitation to force govt. to present white paper and bring all this hidden info out. It is understandable if one toll is collected at Kundapur or Mangalore or vice versa for a 80 km trip. This is unacceptable putting locals to hardship without constructing service roads on both sides.

I do agree that toll has to be paid on fully completion of work but why there are two toll gates within a distance of 10 km (NITK & Hajmady)
This is a loot by the Central Government.

Toll tax from public is done in every part of India, in Mumbai tax is not collected from the areas where the toll is build like wise give exception to light vehicles . And no one is asking for how many years are you collecting tax because in ten years the roads will be pathetic because if L& T builds the roads they give a guarantee of many years. when will this tax pratha end . Every toll should have a electronic display of the road tax collected when a vehicle pays tax automatically it should be added to the display so public will know how much of tax has been collected .

PEOPLE OF UDUPI WANT ALL THE GOOD THINGS IN LIFE BUT NOT READY TO PAY FOR IT. BUYING VEHICLE IS NOT COSTLY, PAYING TOLL IS. EVERY OTHER PERSON IS OWNING A VEHICLE, NOT LESS THAN FEW LACS. PAYING RS.50 IS FINANCIAL BURDEN. DON'T YOU FEEL HYPOCRISY. GO TO A BAR, YOU SEE SO MANY DRUNKARDS. GO TO A JEWELRY SHOP, YOU SEE PEOPLE BUYING GOLD AT UNREASONABLE RATES. SEE THE APARTMENTS AND LAYOUTS, YOU HAVE ALL THE LUXURIOUS LIVING. ALL THESE SHOW THE PROSPERITY OF THE REGION. BUT THIS ACT TO OPPOSE PAYING RS.50, LOOKS VERY CHEAP. IF ITS SOME TECHNICAL ISSUES, TALK TO THE AUTHORITIES OR TAKE A LEGAL COURSE. BUT DON'T PROJECT YOURSELVES SO POOR AND HELPLESS. I PITY ON THOSE FOREIGN TOURIST.

Your comment is irrelevant and makes no sense. Toll money should be collected after the work is completed in every respect.

Total completion of work is 85.6%, what about service road, bus bay/ lorry bay, bus stand facility, toilet facilities, proper road signals lighting arrangements not at all done. The Karnataka Government officials declaring that all the land handed over to the Construction company, but by they have not completing service road etc., etc., as mentioned above.

We are ready to pay toll , they have to protect the welfare of common lives, for the last several years construction period, in both the district lot of accidents took and our own people lost their life and their families are suffering.

Delayed work at Padubidri, and in several place unscientific crossing and lot of other technical maters not dealt suitably. The responsibility of local MP not dealt suitably. Exemption required for both KA 20/KA19 .This has to be considered only after completion of 100%.
Construction co., should have seen our Padubidri Karkala road the performances.

Existing roads have been converted to highways and then given to private companies to do some addons and patch work( 4 lane conversion) with Toll collection rights. The government is bound to give a alternative non toll road for the public and the Public should demand this.

its just cheap attitude of protestors who try to say enjoy everything from the govt free of cost. If somebody protest for speed of the work is okay but collection of toll charges are legally right. Number of public in same pudibidri who brought stay order by creating land dispute which is the main cause in delaying the highway project completion has impacted various road accedent. Actually public must speak in this regard rather than asking more n more toll exemption.

People are happy to pay toll if the work is complete! Rest areas, toilets, drainage work is still pending....lot of stretches on highway are not 4 lane still....Certainly people will not support this kind of highway robbery. No politician is talking may be due to bags are heavy! Navayuga is going to collect lakhs daily... They may spare a small part for greasing!!

Toll collection me public ko thoda dimag lagana chahiye...isme navayuga co. ki koi galati nahi hai...uno ne road banane k liye govt. se contract liya aur bana k toll collect karenge..yaha pe galti hai to apne transport department...ki unko road tax collect karna bandh kardena padega iske liye aam janata ko awaaz uthna hai...apna mind thosa samaj k divert karo mere sabhi desh wasiyo....

transport dept have to stop collecting tax on the vehicels and for those the tax already collected as road tax 50% should be refunded. and for new no road tax then we will happily pay the toll gate without any hindrance,,,u are collecting as road tax then y u cant build the good roads for the publice where the tax money goes of all the vehicles my dear govt. ye hai ameeroun ka garib desh.......

tax badh raha hai day to day but no money for construction of roads...then y u collect tax no tax no road ..good policy..... let the private co. built the road and collect toll no prblm to every one by this policy i think,.......

request all of u to read this comment and undrstand it plzzz......proud....
