Udupi: Bhaskar murder - HC stays appointment of Shantaram Shetty as special public prosecutor

Udupi, Jan 23: In a blow to the prosecution in the case relating to the murder of businessman Bhaskar Shetty, the high court on Monday January 23 ordered a stay on the appointment of advocate Shantaram Shetty as the special public proscutor in the case.

The state government had appointed senior advocate Shantaram Shetty as the special public prosecutor in October 2016 to handle on the case.

However, advocate Arun Shyam, the defence counsel for accused Rajeshwari, had filed objections in the high court against the appointment, on the grounds that Shantaram Shetty had addressed a press meet along with Bhaskar Shetty's mother and spoken openly on the case.

Shantaram Shetty had convened the press meet along with Bhaskar's mother Gulabi and others on August 11, 2016, much before he was appointed as the special public proscutor. In the press meet, he had referred to the case as 'rarest of the rare' and expressed his full support to whoever would be appointed as the special public prosecutor. He had also accused the police of botching up the case and termed the FIR as being 'favourable' to the accused.

The stay order was pronounced by single-bench of the high court consisting of Justice Anand Byrareddy.

In the interest of justice, non-bunt and non-brahmin community lawyer should be appointed, since accused in this heinous episode are belonging to these two communities.

Any advocates will do. Get justice to Bhaskar Shetty's mother. As a defense advocate don't tell lies to the judge. Our Law system is so bad, people lost trust in it and started to take up the law in their hands.

Dr Kusum, appreciate your concern on the brutal murder of Shetty, but Just like the motto of your profession to serve a patient till last moment of his death, justice or law in India clearly states that no person is guilty unless proved and sentenced by a court of law. So let us wait for the judgement
